Default Safely disconnecting a flash drive from windows 98se

How do you safely disconnect the flash drive (thumb drive, pen drive) from
the usb port on a computer running windows 98se.
With windows XP there is an icon on the task bar for safely removing the
flash drive

Put the PC in standby - remove flash drive - come out of standby.
