XviD codec for W98 and Media Player Classic.
Any recommendations, bearing in mind this:
I have one by 'Koepi' (XviD-1.1.0-Beta1-16012005 _Beta Release_) that plays fluently, but will not let me change aspect ratio to correct for badly made files. Removing it lets me see DivX but not XviD, and while it lets me change aspect ratio, it will not play fluently, or in sync, so Media Player Classic has no adequate inbuilt decoders. Obviously I could try any and all with rediculous wastes of time, so please don't recommend anything you do not know from recent personal experience, ideally in solving this problem. I'm not after the many variants that for whatever reason also do not work well, I need to know the latest W98 compatible one that did. Standalone AX codecs preferred, NOT do-it-all packs like FFDshow which don't let me avoid large amounts of unwanted stuff I can't control. Best of all, very specific files, with known versions and dates. I am not changing to another player. For one-off viewing I can always do that, but I intend to improve use of the main player, and I'd like known examples for this specific player, Media Player Classic v6.4.8.4, which work well, and do not conflict with or disable internal controls for aspect ratio, etc. (There was a later MPC version that (just barely) ran on W98, but it caused more trouble than it fixed, so that too is no use to me). |

I will consider FFdshow too, as I have what look like good results from
ffdshow_rev2322_20081114_clsid.exe, though it's too soon to be sure. It looks like it's from before ffdshow started to try to do too much, and ruled out users of W98. If anyone knows the history better than me and can explain where things changed, and what point I should explore it to find the best version, please tell me. All I know so far is that at some point W98 support was revoked, and also that during progress on various XviD codecs, aspect ratio correction was removed from user control, then later put back in our control. I don't even know if this one I'm testing now was from before or after that time when aspect ratio control was taken from us. |

You might be able to find out the history of this program (and others) at the http://www.videohelp.com/ website, which is a great video resource. That website also contains links to new and old versions of many video programs. Also, have you considered a small video tool program that is designed to just modify the attributes of a video file, such as MPEG4Modifier? A link to the program list on their website is given below http://www.videohelp.com/tools/secti...deo-repair-fix You'll find it in there, along with a list of categories at the top of the web page showing categories for a wide variety of video programs and video tools on their website. http://www.videohelp.com/tools |

Shrug.) Try codecs.com. If you grab the K-Lite Codec Pack, you'll get pretty much every codec ever created for any purpose. (I exaggerate, but still...) This file: ftp://mail.rax.ru/pub/soft/multimedi...k_880_Mega.exe ....is what I'm using. 21,734 KB; dated 5/17/2012. (That file is what codecs.com links to, btw; it's not just some random site.) If you want something else, just browse through that ftp directory. Several other things available (including smaller, less-inclusive versions of K- Lite). -- Tower down! Tunnels down! Wreck everything but the dungeon! Do your worst. |

44.100: ftp://mail.rax.ru/pub/soft/multimedi..._Pack_880_Mega. exe It's not for W98, the installer gives the usual 'newer version of Windows' demand. Any way to crack it open for manual extraction and Regsvr32 install of specific parts? |

Nice small program there, finds installed codecs, made by the same person who made NirCmd I think. There's a CCCP package there, but same applies, I need to open packages manually to see separate AX files and try manual install. The main problem with packs is that while they are aimed at fixing the codec equivalent of DLL hell, the difference can often be reduced to that between hell we can control, and hell we cannot. At least separate files give us a fighting chance. There's a good chance that they run on W98 too, whether the installer thinks so or not. |

If it covers some of the divergence from past codec install and usage methods, and reasons for that, it will help me. Also, have you considered a small video tool program that is designed to just modify the attributes of a video file, such as MPEG4Modifier? No but I should have. I just didn't know how, or even if I could fix things like that this way, especially if (as according to someone calling for help on Doom9 posted) the codec or program overrides the inbuilt settings for aspect ratio found in the file. Worth looking into though.. A link to the program list on their website is given below http://www.videohelp.com/tools/secti...deo-repair-fix You'll find it in there, along with a list of categories at the top of the web page showing categories for a wide variety of video programs and video tools on their website. http://www.videohelp.com/tools Definitely to be explored.. Quick look now is all, but more later. The tools for file repair might be useful, I'd usually opened in Vdub or one of its variants to try that, with variabke results after resaving. I can't be quickly sure what to do because I have several files that seem borked, but MD5 records show they were unchanged, and I know they were fine once, or I'd not have kept them. So the assuption is that the codec I was using until recently was dodgy, and some other unknown codec I had in the past was better. I'd hoped to blunder intio it by chance here in some old stash, but no go so far. The FFdshow I found seems to work ok, but until I have tested it on at least 50 video files I won't know if I'm gaining on the deal. (I also found a final version of that beta I was using, but it fails the same way, so I know I once had something significantly different and better, and I have no clue how or when I ended up with a worse one... Maybe I didn't, maybe some other context changed, but that could be even harder to fathom. I'm fairly sure that I was using DirectX v9c and Media Player Classic v6.4.8.4 throughout though, and the OS hasn't changed either.) |

The very few (so-called) "file repair" apps I've tried haven't worked yet on a corrupted file, so who knows. I think that makes sense, as it would be infinitely harder to fix (reconstruct) a corrupt video file (or an exe file, for that matter!!), than something as simple as a text (or even doc) file, for that matter. I can't be quickly sure what to do because I have several files that seem borked, but MD5 records show they were unchanged, and I know they were fine once, or I'd not have kept them. That videohelp site has version histories for lots of files on its site, so you may find something in that regard. Here is the ffdshow link, and on it you'll find the changelogs for ffdshow. http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshow I've just noted a bug on their web site this weekend, which I hope they soon fix: When searching their website now, I'm seeing some dumbass Google search warning note: "Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!", which is complete B.S. It's pretty annoying, to say the least. :-) So if you want to search their website, you may have to wait for this dumbass thing to be resolved (otherwise the site is working fine). (I also found a final version of that beta I was using, but it fails the same way, so I know I once had something significantly different and better, and I have no clue how or when I ended up with a worse one...
