qbase7:
I can only give you my personal view.
The problem in your case is not the firewall, but your installation of
WinME. What in particular is causing your system to flop, I don't know.
Someone with more knowledge here will most probably assist you after you
supplied a few more details.

Harry.

AVG has been working like a charm for me, knock on wood. I also tried AVAST
and did not dislike but it is not user friendly. AVG is pretty much self
served and updates on a regular basis. I have put it on a number of XPs and
all good to go. Not too bad for a free one. Just my two cents on AV.

Sorry, I guess I mistook the question for Anti virus program, my bad! Please
ignore my earlier suggestion. As for Firewall, almost all the free ones that
I used created a problem or two. I tried "Tiny" for a while on ME and
something was not quite right. It is a very very simple firewall. Even though
it has been working great on win 98. Good luck!

I have to disagree, b4 I installed the firewall Win Me worked fine ( was
using a router), needed 2 install a firewall as the user did not have a
firewall, the user also had same problem with a firewall supplied on the ntl
broadband cd, lock ups, corruption of windows etc

Must be more to this than you state. I used Zone Alarm, both free and Pro,
on WinME for 5 years with no problems. Perhaps a few more details would
help. And the worst thing that I/we have seen ZA do is stop System Restore
from making automatic restore points. No trashing of an O/S that I know of.

Zone Alarm works fine with Win Me and other than for your post I have
never heard in the five plus years since Win Me was first released that
installing Zone Alarm or for that matter any firewall with the sole
exception of the assorted rubbish sold by Symantec/Norton (such as NIS)
has caused the slightest damage to the user's system. Zone Alarm and many
other similar products can cause a problem in that they frequently cause
the state manager to stop making automatic system restore checkpoints due
to the state manager being fooled into believing that the system is never
idle. This is not the same as causing irreparable damage, simply that the
user needs to make manual system restore checkpoints as required.

qbase7,
As the others have already stated, it ain't the firewall. I used ZA
free and ZA Pro for years with nothing more than the System Restore debacle
as a problem (resolved many versions ago). I am leaning toward your method
of installation as the problem, like Harry said. Did you have your AV and
other interfering apps shut down before installing?? Any subsequent
installation attempts for ZA, on your part, are probably encountering left
over .dll's and other files making your installation much more difficult.
Consult the Zone Labs site uninstalls and, additionally, do a Google
search on the topic to make sure you have removed any detritus botching your
install. To be really safe, install from the Safe Mode after removing any
conflicting files.
In answer to your question, check this site for reviews of different
firewalls and other utilities:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best..._utilities.htm . You will see
that ZA, Sygate and, Kerio are in the top 3.
Heirloom, old and still using ZAPro

I have an interest in the company - this is well documented - and it's not
financial but rather I just plain find 'em interesting... Outpost...

I was out of town this weekend and my sister asked me to look at her ME
machine. Scandisc would continually run until being manually cancelled. I
remembered that I had the same problem last year on my ME machine. When
Zone Alarm updated, the problem was created. I ended up uninstalling and am
now running Outpost.
