Default Firewall

Need Help trying to connect to internet thru cable modem on a think pad.
Have pcmcia card connection works on my desktop but will not connect to
think pad. Think Pad running windows 98 se. Called cable tech they said I
was getting ping out but must have some type of firewall and will not let
data in. They could not help not being able to return data said must have a
firewall . But they could see my system sending out.
Any Ideas??
Help Please

Unsure,
If you mean Unplug desktop, plug in laptop direct to cable modem, Cant do
it.
Cable modem is set by installers to read MAC number of adapter card in pc,
Different PCMCIA cards have different mach number, cable modem locks out
data transfer, allows ping, it assumes you are installer about to configure
modem to pc. You cant reconfigure, done remotely by signal on the cable, you
would have to call support centre every time you want to unplug one pc and
plug in the other.

Buy cheap router (start at $19.00)
clone mach number of Working adapter into router, menu choice in most
routers setup, is **** easy user manual in dlink router is single 8*5 card
plug both computers into router

Along the same lines as the above... Turn of PC, turn off Cable device
(can't call it a modem, I'm not allowed) and then turn on the cable device
and then turn on the laptop. Strange as this sounds my 98 lappy that I take
with me to various places needs to either have the device turned off and
then on and it off and then on to work with a certain firewall. I'm thinking
a router would do the trick as mentioned above but that you should check
this first. After you've rebooted the machine should see the address and
you'd then be able to connect. Try that and see... The firewall was Outpost
by the way and yes it's being looked at.
