Hehehe don't ask me, I just hit reply group like I always have done, it took
me by surprise when I saw the name and found it was me g
My router is wireless and wired always has been, I first connected via wire
with my XP machine and the other XP and WinME machines were via wireless,
now I have a new machine with Vista that is connected with the ethernet
cable and my old XP and the WinME via wireless. The other XP bit the dust,
it was my husbands so he got my XP. g

Is the fact you're now on NT6 why you're posting as 'msnews', Joan?

I'd like to add that many people think a wireless router *only* works as a
wireless router, or that even if you can plug into via cable also, the
wireless is always on, and that wireless is very insecure. So I want to
make
the point that you can get a wireless router and use it solely as a wired
router with the wireless disabled; and that anyway while wireless *used to
be* really insecure, now the favoured encryption is much stronger.

I'll second that and can vouch for the fact they work well.
I have a Wireless 4 Port ADSL router that I've had working since
getting broadband late 2004, it had a Windows XP and WinME machine
connected to it via wireless and the other XP was wired to the
router, that was me g
I am now using a Vista Home Premium machine and just connected the
cable from the router to the back of it and it works and my old XP
now connects via wireless to the router plus the old WinME machine is
still going strong and in use g

DSL doesn't need a "newer" OS however if one is using a USB ADSL
modem then yes, newer modems are unlikely to come with Win Me
compatible drivers. However I would very strongly advise anyone
using or considering using a usb ADSL modem to head for the nearest
waste bin and consign their usb modem to history and then buy
themselves a combined adsl modem/router. These are not expensive and
require no drivers on any connected PC or MAC, allow more than one
PC or MAC to access the internet without the needs for any other
machine other than the router to be on, and, best of all, will come
with a NAT and perhaps also SPI (stateful packet inspection)
firewall with even the more basic NAT (network address translation)
providing vastly greater protection against unwanted intrusions than
any software firewall a user might have installed. --

Ah! .. From here, it sounds like you've got (at least) a couple of
drivers 'installed' for the same modem. So yes, 'Remove' any/all
modem drivers in Dev Man in Safe Mode.

Off out - won't be able to continue till late tonight.

Thanks Mart. Unfortunate, as someone else pointed out, DSL now
needs a newer OS, and I've just upgraded this machine to XP Home.

To Mart, Mike, and Loom, I thank you for all the help and slaps to
the head you've given me.

And yes, I'm enjoying my 12 mbps connection.

Thanks to Mike & Shane (aka Alter Ego) for jumping in and well done to
Mewtwo for moving into the 21 century and joining the XP brigade. I hope
all is now well. But don't abandon the WinMe Groups, come back and visit
sometime.

I'll try to drop in from time to time to see what other problems have
befallen ME users.

BTW, now with XP Home firmly installed I was able to get Ad-Aware back and
ran a scan...,27 objects found...,SpyBot is not overall the best spyware
scanner.

Hehehe don't ask me,

You still don't seem to have edited the display text although you've now
added your own spoofed e-mail addy so you're half-way there. Good to see
your new box is still holding up. g

Depends what they found. All mine ever found were MRU lists, which aren't
spyware or any-ware come to that. I tested Ad-aware recently against Spybot
and SuperAntispyware and Ad-aware found nothing. Spybot found my hosts edit
(I put MSN and toolbar.google.com in there) - which of course is just it
being paranoid. SuperAntispyware found five tracking cookies on other
profiles (I use a custom cookie handling .xml, but no-one else wants it so
restrictive, so they still get the odd tracking cookie). Ad-aware found
nothing. Of course, this doesn't mean Ad-aware is totally crap. None of the
positives were anything to be concerned about. But back when I used to run
Ad-aware as a matter of course - and did less MRU list clearing than I do
now - all it ever found, apart from the odd tracking cookie, were MRU
entries. About 27 of them.

I meant the "From" name that is displayed rather than the e-mail address.
It seems you've got it right now. vbg

Messenger. Do you have time to use Messenger between your phone calls?
gdrvvvf (some chance)

This hot weather and Noel's visit are the tonic I've been needing for a
while and am now feeling more alive than I have for months. All that
remains is to somehow undo the damage I've done to myself over the last
several months!

Ciao

Mike

lol Glad the weekend did you good, mind you the weather has changed for
the worst at the moment high winds and rain not the best for the holiday
season down here.
As for messenger I know Steven used it a lot not sure about now and if Noel
does his disappearing trick with it, well who knows g

You see I haven't deserted my WinME friends just because I've gone up market

LOL, You're just catching up! And with the release of Vista SP1 not a bad
time to be doing so either.
