Default Reset of pc

My pc needs the inelegant method of switching off the mains supply if
it freezes. Previous ones used a reset button that operated internally
to the pc. Is it possible to pick up connections to do the same in any
of the sockets on the pc case? There are unused ones that could do
the same with an external push button. Fourty years ago I did this
with my Commodore 64 which was lacking a decent reset method.

Read your motherboard manual.

may also show unused(at the moment) pins for reset button, may have reset
button disabled

cannot find the manual but as it is a Compaq 7477 I hope I can run a
copy to earth.

You should solve the freeze problem, instead of thinking of such a
thing.

A quick thing might be to try Safe Mode, to see whether it freezes
there. If not, then it is likely something in the Startup Group or a
32-bit Normal Mode driver doing it. Then, there is an MSCONFIG
troubleshooting method for that, explained in "START, Help, Contents,
Troubleshooting, Windows 98 Troubleshooters, Startup & Shutdown
section".
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot
That also is the Troubleshooters.

Also...

How to Troubleshoot Using the Msconfig Utility with Windows 98
(281965) - This article describes how to use the Microsoft System
Configuration (Msconfig) utility to troubleshoot configuration errors in
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition.

Careful with that one, though. Don't turn off System.ini or Win.ini,
unless you know how to restore them in DOS.

To get to Safe Mode, hit F5 as you boot. Or hit Ctrl for the Startup
Menu, if not already enabled at "START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button".

(1) The mouse & keyboard are the ones with moving parts, & they are
"hooked", meaning tasks will run each time you touch one. Therefore,
with the computer off, unplug the mouse & hold by it's tail until it may
stop spinning & squawking. Also, open & clean the ball & rollers. That
is not a design you may see on the rollers-- it is a band of dirt
running round the center! Also, unplug the keyboard, turn it round &
spank it.

(2) If disabling your virus checker's auto-"System" scan, using it's
Tray button, leaving the other types on, gives immediate & dramatic
relief, I have further info. This supposedly applies to Scan Engine
4.1.60.

I find that my pc already has the facility described, thanks for
telling me, without a manual its features are unknown. It has a 1 GB
partition of the HD devoted to Compaq a mystery area.

Going back to the pc freezing as this will block the keyboard a BIOS
related solution does not seem possible. A simple push button to
generate a non-maskable Reset impulse seems the most promising cure. I
asked for this feature on my previous machine, a clone, and found it
satisfactory. It surprises me that this facility is not standard on
all machines, switching the mains power off and on is not usually
considered beneficial to the electrics and is sometimes suggested as a
way of provoking pending faults.

Stap me vitals! I never expected such a comprehensive reply, many thanks. Perhaps I should explain I
have inherited a Compaq which has had a hammering of three years family service, it is a bit
temperamaental at present and has just deleted my first attempt at this message. Up to then freezing
was its speciality. Unfortunately the manuals are missing so the pc is a bag of mystery as it has a
battery of handy routines in a dedicated partition of the HD of which I have no knowlege. A format
and reload is attractive except that the set up discs are lost. Families! My former pc has succombed
probably to the frying it got because I neglected to keep the heat sink on the CPU clean. I guess
there is a corrupted program in the Compaq causing grief though I turned a cleaner loose on it. That
found about 10MB of junk.
Again many thanks.

You are welcome. Well...

(1) Mine is a Compaq 7470. In a fit of impatience, I did have a clicking
fest inside Add/Remove Programs, but I hesitate to say which items I
removed. There STILL is plenty Compaq there. Well... looks like I
removed...

(a) Compaq Automatic Updating for Windows
(b) Compaq WEBISP
(c) Compaq WEBREG
(d) Compaq Wizard Host Online
(e) Compaq NET Registration
(f) Compaq Service Connection (BackWEB)

Remaining items are...

(a) Compaq Desktop 100 Screen Saver
(b) Compaq Hardware Discovery
(c) Compaq IE Custom
(d) Compaq IE5 Customization
(e) Compaq OOBE Online
(f) Compaq CPQ Hardware Discovery

....Perhaps a few of those really didn't have "Compaq" in front of them.

(2) Try the Compaq site for SP's, of which I took at least 15...
http://web14.compaq.com/falco/default.asp

(3) I once had a freezing problem of my own. Don't know precisely what
cured it. Have you gone to Windows Update & taken the cumulative IE
update(s)?

Try a Google search for your motherboard, and/or a search at the
Compaq site. Note: if the system was purchased from a retail store
you may or may not get an exact match: often a retailer will create a
specific package for sale only by them (better/worse video, more/less
RAM, software package, etc.).

Holy Moly!

The term "bloatware" has taken on a whole new meaning. I suppose every
one of those loads at boot too! Sheeeesh, I just cleaned up a client's
new HP box that absolutely assaulted you with "I'm running!" notices
at(painfully slow)start-up, which I *thought* was bad with the
pre-loaded goo.
