Wordpad Problem
Afternoon mi amigos,
When I try to open Wordpad I get the following: Wordpad has caused an error in unknown. Although I seldom use this feature I would like to try and understand why this error is occurring and how to correct it. Any (helpful, nice, or even humorous) suggestions would be appreciated. |

Many errors in Wordpad are fixed by removing this key in the Registry
with Regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt Version\Applets\Wordpad A restart may be necessary. See this article: Invalid Page Fault Starting WordPad or Paint [Q218632] http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=218632 ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems In microsoft.public.windowsme.software, "Job" wrote: When I try to open Wordpad I get the following: Wordpad has caused an error in unknown. |

Hi again Alan,
Before following your procedure I looked at KB 218632 to see what it had to say. Since it talked about both Wordpad and Paint I attempted to open Paint and got message "MSPaint has caused an error....". When I went to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, Accessories, Details the things listed were Calulator, Desktop Wallpaper, Document Templates, Imaging, Paint, and Screen Savers (notice absence of Wordpad). I unchecked Paint then went to regedit per your and KB instructions where I deleted the Applets\Wordpad and Applets\Paint. Then I returned to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, Accessories, Details and put a check by Paint (again I point out that Wordpad is not listed there). Result of this effort is that I can now open Paint, however, I still get message "Wordpad has caused an error in unknown. Wordpad will now close." Any other suggestions to clear the error? How do you think I can get Wordpad to show up in the Windows Setup, Accessories list? Thanks for you help. .. "Alan Edwards" wrote in message ... No other suggestions to fix the problem if you have deleted the
Registry key completely. Wordpad is not meant to be in Add/Remove-Windows Setup. WordPad is not included in Add / Remove Programs utility as an installable program in Windows Millennium, this is by design. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.windowsme.software, "Job" wrote: Hi again Alan, Before following your procedure I looked at KB 218632 to see what it had to say. Again Alan, thanks for your help. Maybe someone else will
drop in with a suggested fix. Have a good weekend. "Alan Edwards" wrote in message ... No other suggestions to fix the problem if you have deleted the Registry key completely. OK. Just in case there are misunderstandings, you must delete the
Wordpad key completely in the left-hand pane of Regedit and not just remove any values in the right-hand pane and then restart in case it is needed. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.windowsme.software, "Job" wrote: Again Alan, thanks for your help. Maybe... The only other 'fix' that I can recall for WordPad issues is the
old MFC42.DLL mishmash chestnut which can affect both WordPad and Paint. This is another *possible* solution - if you are prepared to give it a try. BTW - Don't forget, as you've only edited your registry, you can run SR to get back to where you started the other day so that you are back to your original problem. Then do a search for any/all copies of mfc42.dll that exist on your PC and for the moment, make a note of their locations AND their versions and dates. (Right-click / Properties) The correct WinMe version of mfc42.dll is 6.0.8665.0 dated 8 June 2000 at 1700 Hrs. If you have any other version(s) on your PC then continue. Search your C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or Install sub-folders for the WIN_12.CAB and open and extract/copy mfc42.dll to a temporary folder. (This will the correct version mentioned above - although it *may* show "today's date" once you've extracted it.) Now boot into safe mode and rename any/all of the 'wrong version' copies that you made a note of, to e.g. mfc42.old and be sure to copy the correct version to the Windows\System folder. (You only NEED one copy and it SHOULD BE located in the System folder) Reboot into Normal Mode and try WordPad (and Paint) again to see if it/they now work OK If no improvement - you can always reverse the above steps g BTW - As Alan has already alluded, WordPad is incorporated into WinMe by design unlike Paint which is optional. It was however, optional in both Win95 & Win98 HTH and good luck. Mart "Job" wrote in message ... Again Alan, thanks for your help. Maybe someone else will drop in with a suggested fix. Good morning Alan,
I don't think there is any misunderstanding. I did delete the Wordpad key in the left-hand pane and then restarted my system. Thank you for asking for clarification. Morning Mart,
Thanks for your input and heck yes I will give it a try. At least I will experience something new as I have never ventured into the Windows\Options area nor have I ever "extracted files".
