Check Control Panel for something called "Fast Find". It behaves like a virus, no one tells you about it, and if you ask about it people advise you re reformat your disk and re-install Windows, which of coriouse reinstals it. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7734/stevesig.htm E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk |

Excuse, please?
"Steve Hayes" wrote in message ... Check Control Panel for something called "Fast Find". It behaves like a virus, No, it does not. no one tells you about it, It's documented in the Microsoft Office suite and on the Microsoft site. and if you ask about it people advise you re reformat your disk and re-install Windows, which of coriouse reinstals it. Wrong on many counts. No one here advises to reinstall Windows because of FindFast (that's the CORRECT name for it, by the way). It can be disabled as shown he http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q158705 And finally, it's installed by MICROSOFT OFFICE, not MICROSOFT WINDOWS. -- Richard G. Nobody in these groups would get away with telling someone to do that. Fast
find does not behave like a virus--it is merely a "bad" feature that should be shut off since it costs more in performance than it is worth (my opinion). And, reinstalling Windows has nothing to do with fast find as it is an Office feature. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Steve Hayes" wrote in message ... I was responding to the original poster, as one of the things that can cause defrag to stop is a program trying to access the hard disk. I also didn't intend to imply that anyone here had given the advice to reformat. But others did. I found that there was a lot of hard disk activity that would eventually slow my computer down, and I did not know what was causing it. I asked on other forums (NOT this one, and everyone suggested that it might be caused by a virus. It stopped me from defragmenting the disk. I would press the reset button every few hours hours. The only advice anyone gave me was reformat and reinstal, until someone suggested the Find Fast thingy. I checked it, changed the settings, and the problem disappeared. When I installed it, I did not expect it to behave like that, and it was certainly virus-like behaviour. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7734/stevesig.htm E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk |
