Default Cannot scandisc and/or defrag, get Fatal Exception in the middle

I cannot do a Scandisc. During the middle of it, a Fatal Exception comes
thru, then I have to restart. Same thing with a defrag, but cannot defrag
without a scandisc anyway.
Whats the cause?

I suspect that it may be a program running in the background. I would:

Do a full scan with an up to date anti virus program.

Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous system problems. I recommend
you download and use the following programs and consider removing everything
these programs identify. Be aware that there are frequent updates to these
programs and you need to check for them before every use.

CWShredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html (download

Did all of the mentioned and just added the "shredder" too, at least I was
able to complete Scandisc. But now I still can't defrag. Downloaded the
VoptXp but I still get a fatal exception error even when clearing and
cleaning everything out, and in Safe Mode.

Shortly before the untimely demise of my 40GB drive a couple of weeks ago,
I too experienced those same problems, though not a fatal exception.
Eventually the Zero sector could not be read :-( So I bought a new drive.
