blocking porn on the internet
Hi there,
We are on win 98, and are using MSN uk as our home page/browser. We have other browsers in our favourites list, i.e google, Alta vista, etc, for specific searches when required. My son, just turned thirteen, is obviously coming to "that age" when guys realise that girls are that little bit different, I don,t mean that they just take all your money and eat ALL the chocolate. He is obviously becoming aware and is having education at school, we answer all his questions (some of them you feel like saying "go ask your Mother"), we have books at home that cover the subject and will read with him and explain when needed. Yesterday, whilst we were watching the Olympics, "J" was on the computer playing a game, - bored with that he decided to go on the internet where he sometimes plays other games or searches for what his heart desires, usually about space etc, the only computer in the house connected to the internet is in the lounge, as we do not like the idea of "J" being alone for hours on his own on the internet. But, yesterday he typed in the word "virgina" in the search window and got a bit of a surprise, basically an endless list of disgusting porn sites. He later told us what had happened, as he is usually very honest, and we asked him to show us what he had done, WE explained the dangers of the internet and that we wanted to keep him safe and that the internet was just like the world, there are safe places to go and very dangerous places, there are safe people and dangerous people, etc,etc I had a look at the sites he had visited and they were in my opinion "hard porn", and although I am average and open minded with regards to "that sort of thing" i.e I am not a monk, we would not normally bother with such material. Pandora's box has been opened and although "J" understands, we are worried about the ease with which this type of site can be accessed, sometimes by accident. What is the best way, in your opinion, to limit /block access to unsavoury information without affecting our searches. p.s We have a private I.S.P ( my brother in law runs his own company and rents a large amount of server space to host customers web sites etc), so unlike AOL etc there is not the add on bits and pieces like screening and anti-spam etc. Many thanks for your help, Steve. |

Might try ETrust's Internet Security Suite. It includes Parental Controls
which are intended to filter out objectionable content. Not sure how it works, whether via whitelist of blacklist, but it's worth a try, eh? They have a discounted offer here, (might have to scroll down, it's below the stand-alone antivirus offerings.) http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ -- Gary S. Can't tell you much about it. I've never played with it. However, IE itself
has some content control. Perhaps a password protected access to the internet is part of that. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Moonraker" wrote in message ... If I might come in on the back end of your suggestion Gary concerning the
blacklisting of porn sites via some program. SpywareBlaster has an extensive list of blocked porn sites which you might be able to "leech" and use for the creation of the list. There are also several other sites or programs which offer such information. During the time when my children were of concern, I used a program called NetNanny. You might also contact some of the numerous parenting sites for other programs and/or information. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Can't tell you much about it. I've never played with it. blocking porn on the internet
Hi Gary,
I can't remember who it was, either yourself or glee (Glen Ventura) or PCR, but it was suggested that I up grade to IE 6 SP1. If I was to do so, would all my e-mail addresses be just as they are? Would I be able to access this newsgroup via outlook express as I do now? Would my folders and content remain unchanged with the saved e-mails within them? In IE would all my favourites be saved to be accessed from IE 6. Or would I need to save all these and any other "settings and saved" to reinstall to IE 6 Cheers Steve. "Gary S. OK, but understand that my later experiments suggest that it may *not* help with the Windows Updates issue. The HTTPS secure address is the only thing I 've seen work every time. https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp If I was to do so, would all my e-mail addresses be just as they are? Yes. IE 6 just isn't all that different from IE5.x. But backing up your personal data before doing any major programming changes is just good practice *in_case* something goes drastically wrong. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User |
