Question for M$ Fanboys:

Is Windows 7 finally the compelling reason to migrate from Windows 98?

Side question: what do I do for Microsoft Fax?

Why no mention of google's upcoming 'open source' OS?

I've heard the boot up can take 0.2 seconds

I wonder why this does NOT sound like good news to me...

There is no cure for stupidity. Oh well, I guess it keeps the
Chinese economy growing, so it's a good thing. Gotta keep
building jails for those dissidents.

That certainly isn't my findings with any of the people

is easy, at worse a wipe and reinstall and with a good
backup set your back in business.

YOU know it, but most people know nothing.

I would say that the number one reason why people change
their computer is that they can't run the newer software or
some of the new gadgets that they buy on their computer.

There hasn't been anything "new" worthwhile written for years -
it's all rewrites of stuff from 10-30 years ago with 20 or 50 MB
of eye candy and useless bloat and "features" no-one knows about
or would understand (let alone use) if even if s/he did.

Your printer goes pouff! and none of the new printers out
there have drivers for Windows 9x.

I have a 12 year old HP laser printer which works better than
when I first got it (I finally installed the little "don't pull
in more than one sheet at a time" thingy a couple of years ago).

Hey how you doing there?

You've got me beat.

I have an Epson Stylus printer that is ten years old.
Someone gave it to me about 4 years ago...they said it was on it's last
legs (It sometimes makes a slight grinding sound when I first turn it on)

It's still working great and if I'd care to replace the color cartridge
in it...
could still print decent photos.

I use it every day and I use it for only one thing...
that's printing out crossword puzzles.

Since I am just printing them at draft quality...
and don't want to spend $30 for a new cartridge...
just re-ink it myself. (Rubber gloves advised)

Don't know what this thread has to do with Win98 so that's why I marked
it OT

as to Win7

I always try the new operating systems though I don't actually use them.

All I can say is Win7 works better than Vista...
and if buying a new machine would probably be fine.

But any machine now running Win98 ...
if looking to upgrade Windows...
probably XP would be best.

Still here. Bored as hell. Cleaning house, recycling, selling
some stuff, organizing the endless accumulation of 50+ years of
stuff, but in no hurry, because when I'm done, not only will I
be all alone as now, but I will have NOTHING to do.

Hope all is well with you guys.

Cool. Mine probably lasted /this/ long because it took me 8
years to go through the first cartridge (that was before the
charming practice of "starter" cartridges"). It is not as well
built as the II and III's were.

I use it every day and I use it for only one thing...

Yes, they would be a little hard to do on the screen... Well,
the whiteboard markers probably would come off completely, come
to think of it...

These groups are going downhill REALLY fast... It doesn't matter
anymore...

Oh yeah - I always explain to people that if you buy a *new*
machine - even with Vista, you will probably have no problems.
But who needs a new machine when you have 3 two of which you
almost never use and the one you use has enough crap on it to
keep you organizing it for the rest of your life?

But any machine now running Win98 ...
if looking to upgrade Windows...
probably XP would be best.

I just hope this Compaq EVO510 (whose MB supports 98) lasts for
as long as I have any patience left for the internet... Since I
am NOT going online with XP... Maybe Linux... From my
experiments with XP the redundant copies of SO many files and
all the idiotic account stuff is REALLY insane. Sigh.

Cheers.

I did a major house cleanup maybe 15 or 20 years ago...
I hauled an entire van-load of old, big and heavy vacuum test equipment
out of my basement and sold it piece by piece at an auction.
Not too much got more than $3...but it all sold.

I thought for sure I'd have regrets...
but nope..it just let me start all over again.

Hope all is well with you guys.

Yes...all well here...after having known each other for 15 years now...
my girlfriend (Colleen) finally asked me when the hell we were ever
going to get married. I told her, "Gee, thought you were never going to
ask!"
So in about six months...I'll have to be known as Mr. Philo !

We have one good printer in the house...
it's for printing photos. I'm sure we've spent way more on the ink
than the printer ever cost...
I always thought they might just as well give the printers away free!

Yes...one thing I don't like to play is the upgrade game...
but since I always have tons of spare parts I actually built a couple of
modestly hi-end machines about a year ago.

I found that even a dual core CPU with 3 gigs of RAM
was barely enough to run Vista...even with it tweaked for performance...
it ran most tasks at double the time they took from either XP or Linux
(on the same machine)

I still use XP a bit...
but for security reasons switched over to Linux at the beginning of the
year.
As to running Win98...
I find that a P-II or P-III is ideal...
the only problem I'm having is finding old machines...
At one time I could get all I wanted free...(or maybe a buck each)
now the local idiots on Craig's list are trying to sell me P-1's for
$20. sheesh

Cheers.

yeah take care...

btw: have you ever thought about doing xerography when you get bored?
I think I told you about it once
