Ping: PCR CD writer drive stops working
PCR, this ng moves so fast, I thought I better post this new to update you on what
I found out about my HP CDWriter drive that quit, as you wanted to know the outcome. It turns out my HP Cdwriter is bad, surprise due to HP brand, but the tech said mine was after HP went to China, quality went down. He read the thread I had here on the problem, said he had the identical problem on his own computer last year, tried everything including some of the things from my thread. The cause turned out to be loading the power supply with addon accessories later. It helped him, but my actual drive is bad, so unloading the supply didn't improve it. Regards, MS |

Oh. Too bad. Didn't you have two CD-ROM in that thread, though? And didn't one finally begin to work? I don't recall. Were you able to see one in DOS, after booting a Startup Diskette...?...
Get a Startup Diskette from http://www.bootdisk.com/ , if you don't already have one from "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab". Take either one that applies to your system. Test the Startup Diskette. Put the diskette in & turn on the computer. Put in a CD and "DIR" the CD. That is, "DIR X:", where "X:" is the CD-ROM letter. It will say which letter is the CD. (Note: It may be necessary to enter BIOS Setup & set it to boot the floppy drive above the hard drive.) -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "ms" wrote in message ... | PCR, this ng moves so fast, I thought I better post this new to update you on what | I found out about my HP CDWriter drive that quit, as you wanted to know the outcome. | | It turns out my HP Cdwriter is bad, surprise due to HP brand, but the tech | said mine was after HP went to China, quality went down. Yep, you remember right, a long story, but the working CD read drive was removed, it will go back. Regarding boot disks, I have about 4 old ones around. Is the disk from the above link preferable to the standard one the OS produces? MS |

Four! Could be three don't work, then, if you've got four! You must use one created by/for your OS. That means Win98SE, if you are that. A fit/proper Startup Diskette will have it's own CD-ROM driver(s). This will be independent of any Windows problem.
