windows 98 locking up

can anybody help. after switching my pc on yesterday as
soon as windows loads the system locks up when i try to
run any program or application exept fot aol, all i can do
when this happens is reset the main switch. i am running
norton 2002 and this shows nothing but my pc is at this
moment useless, help please.
