Can you reload an old Registry known functional before the date when you changed whatever caused this malfunction? This is done by: -- DOS boot -- CD \Windows\Command -- SCANREG /RESTORE and choose a date. 3. What did you change (that caused this)? Can you change it back? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

HELP!!!!
I czn't start in safe mode Nothing comes up. I have tried the scanreg and it
says it's a invalid command or file. I don't think I did anything to cause it. We only use it for internet and playing a few games. "Don Phillipson" wrote: "aimchele" wrote in message ... HELP!!!!
I tried all of these and only get bad command or file name. I tried the links
also. I can only start in command prompt and almost all the command's say bad command or file name or they try to start windows and I get the error's. One time I did get that it couldn't be done in DOS mode. Scanreg doesn't do anything either. Just says the command file name thing. Sorry I am not very computer literate. Any other suggestions? Your fastest route back to Internet and email is probably to reinstal the operating system. This requires both a CD and a boot floppy which we assume you possess, and you can read how to reinstal at http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html If you are unready to do this, ask any librarian or school teacher you may know to recommend a well-disposed teenager who can do it for you. One fast food meal and one DVD of choice would be a fair payment. Installation takes about 45 min. i.e. much time is spent waiting -- and your teenager can profitably use this time coaching you in good PC housekeeping methods. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

... I just got another thing in command prompt that says the himem.sys is missing On imperfect installations, this may be the single most common boot error, often reported wrongly (i.e. the file is in C:\Windows where the Windows start routine looks for it.) There is a copy on your booting floppy so you can always ACOPY A:HIMEM.SYS C:\WINDOWS and reboot. I used to need to do this every few months but not since I rebuilt the Win98 system. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Start the computer in DOS, type the following command line and restore a previous registry. c:\windows\command\scanreg /restore Ben I've had to go this route a couple of times.I did it this way. Reboot and tap F8 key a few times and then hold 'steady, and with much groaning and pinging it comes back in a safe mode screen. Chose 'Prompt in Safe Mode Only' and entered. At prompt cd\windows\command enter Type at prompt scanreg/restore Then choose date and enter. Works on my machine. The only way it works for me is in Prompt In Safe Mode Only. OP said he couldn't get into safe mode but could get to prompt, maybe he was at the dos prompt in windows and not true dos. If I'm off on this let me know. Regrads.......
