Computer Beeps and Movie Plays Sluggishly

Hello,

A few days ago, my computer froze up all of a sudden and I pressed the reset
button to reset my computer. After going through the POST and screen was
showing "Windows 98 is starting up", the computer started to issue a
continuous beep, i.e., beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Uninterrupted,
non-intermittent.

There are two LED lights on my tower case, one indicating whether the
computer is on, while the other indicating activities for the HD. When the
computer is normal, the 'ON' light will stay on without blinking. However,
it blinked when it was issuing that continuous beep during the "Windows 98
is starting up". And I thought the "Windows 98 is starting up" screen was
on longer than normal, so without any other method to switch off the
computer, I press the power button on the back of the tower case to turn off
the computer.

So sensing that something's wrong with the computer, I let it rest for a
while, and then started it again. It seemed to be normal, without any
beeping and the ON light stayed on.

However, after letting the computer on for some time, I played some movie
files with Realplayer. Unlike before, sometimes frames were skipped. So I
tried to turn it off again, and turned it on. It again issued the beep
during the "Windows 98 is starting up" screen. Let it rest a while, and turn
it on again, and it's "normal" again.

So what's wrong with my pc?? Can it be solved??

Check the web for BIOS beep codes although it would appear that you are =
at the stage where the BIOS has handed operations over to Windows.

Check to see if it happens in Safe Mode. Boot to Safe Mode several =
times.

That's the heat alarm. Your CPU is frying itself to death.
Check the CPU fan and the case fan(s).

Actually there is also this message which has been there for like almost a
year already:

Hardware monitor found an error. Enter power setup menu.

And inside, I found that the -12V voltage was 0.00V and it was red.

And I actually didn't check it for most of the time, as I can continue with
the bootup process by pressing del, and I could get by with everything that
I have been doing.

I also noticed that if I was doing some activities that involve intensive HD
operations, like downloading some large files for a few hours on end, or
watching a movie, and if I thought the performance of the pc was too
sluggish and I restarted it, it would beep. It seems that if the computer
has been turned off for a long time, say 7 or 8 hours for a night's sleep,
before it's turned back on, I won't have that problem.

If it's indeed the problem with the CPU and the cooling fan, what should I
do?

Hope someone here can tell me what I should do to prevent, or at least
minimize the number of occurrences of, that problem.

I am curious as to why you didn't mention this up front.

I said that that was the problem because it was the most likely scenario,
given the absence of any other clues.

Hope someone here can tell me what I should do to prevent, or at least
minimize the number of occurrences of, that problem.

Replace the power supply unit.

I would also buy a new hard drive and back up your data,
just in case you have damaged your hard drive
by running with a faulty PSU.

I would also recommend that you not ignore serious issues.

I really don't know what to make of it. My BIOS doesn't have all those
things. I might guess the continuous beep is something new (perhaps
overheating as Candlin first said), if this monitor message was present
for a year without a beep. However, it could well be, as Candlin now
says, a power supply problem that took a year to get noisy.
