my computer is UTTERLY dead!!
hi all.
I now own a win98se BRICK! boots up like a brick. not a light, beep, whir, or click. *like* booting up a stone. on easter Sunday, no less!! at 9 am in the morning, no "ressurection' here!! no warning either. nothing going bad, nothing giving me any indication at all. win98se. asrock motherboard. 400 watts power. and yes, i switched power cords, tried another surge protector, tried the socet direct, the lights in the surge work and the protector works my other older computer. I see that the on button goes into the motherboard, a bad sign. My computer is about six years old, full of morrowinf mods and all of my games and gamemods. ????? any advice other than taking it to a shop? thanks...freestone |

I'm not sure what you mean by "on button goes into the motherboard". Do you mean that the on button stays in or goes too far in or something like that? It's possible that the on button doesn't work. That's a simple switch, it shouldn't be too difficult to replace. -- Tim Slattery MS MVP(DTS) http://members.cox.net/slatteryt |

Could be the motherboard... *If* you have access to a PSU w/ the proper specs, you could try it. If not, checking voltages will tell you what you need to do (use a multimeter for this). Does not sound good.
But, here are a few less-than-totally-fatal possibilities: 1. Part of power supply is bad, and maybe motherboard and hard drive are OK, but no power to disks and no power to monitor. Unlikely, but if true, then a new power supply would fix all. 2. Motherboard is bad, but everything else is OK. If true, new motherboard would fix. Possible rescue options: 1. Remove hard drive and install as a slave in another PC, then copy personal files. You could also copy installation pacakges, if you have any. That is, some programs come as self-installing *.EXE files. But, do not wate time attempting to copy files from C:\Program Files... 2. Insert hard drive into USB 2.0 case, available cheap at most PC stores. Plug into any PC capable of recognizing USB 2.0 without drive hassles (e.g., XP or LINUX). Then save files. 3. Replace motherboard and hope that it boots from the hard drive. Be sure to boot into safe mode and resolve any driver issues, if any, such as on-board video and audio. Be sure that new motherboard is 98-compatible. Some of the latest ones will only work with XP or higher, since th manufactuer chose not to supply drivers for 98. Finally, maybe it is worth the diagnostic fee to let a professional PC shop find what is wrong. "freestonew" wrote in message ps.com... hi all. I even tried shorting the leads to start the power, as even the button switch could be bad. as i say, a brick. no lights, no fan, not even a click. maybe i can get a more powerful motherboard and a new procesor, as i have morrowind. I cannot afford the new prices for a game computer, these days, as i would have to install winxp and all of that. well my asrock k7vt2 did me well for 6 years. and the amd processor of 2400 did too. can anyone recommend a good board and a good processor over 2400 that will work with my hard drive with win98se on it?! might be better to stick with amd as probably the hard drive "remembers" the amd better than if i went to pentium. i can replace a power supply, but a motherboard?! thanks...freestone |

The power supply most likely has a 20 or 24 pin connector that mates to the motherboard. ONE of the wires on this connector is GREEN. When you press the "ON" button on the case the motherboard connects this wire to ground which turns the power supply ON. If the motherboard has a developed a problem turning the power supply on you can bypass it by connecting the GREEN wire to ground. The ground can be the case or any of the BLACK wires in the same connector. You can even use a bent paperclip to do this to see if the thing powers up. If you can power up you then get to decide if you want to salvage data files and start over or leave the "paper clip" in place and take your chances. I've see systems run with this kind of kluge setup for years. The only problem is that you have to switch off the power supply or pull the plug to shut down. Make sure the wall outlet you are plugged into is the proper voltage and it is properly grounded. Remove the Motherboard from the case and set it on an insulated surface and see if it works then.(this checks it for being grounded out while it is in the case). Check if there is any fuse in the MB. Look on the MB for any leaking or swollen (bulging) capacitors. Post back if you find the solution, etc. Buffalo |
