Default Dell Latitude D620 - Windows 98 drivers existence?

I just bought an used Dell Latitude D620. It has Windows XP in it. I would
like to use Windows 98SE with it instead.

Accessing the Dell support site (US), there are drivers for Windows 2000,
Vista and XP, there is no Windows 98.
In fact, after browsing many older latop models (Latitude, Inspiron,
Precision Mobile), I found NO Windows 98.

Did Dell Latitude D series ever have Windows 98 drivers?
If yes, please tell me where I could find them.
There are thousand of spam sites pretending to provide drivers but .......

Thanks in advance!

No you would not.
without drivers most of the H/W will not function

If the mfg of the machine has no drivers no one else will.

If you want though you could keep XP and just run Win98 in a virtual machine

Could it be that there were such drivers, but Dell have stopped
providing them?

Bit of a sweeping statement (-:!

without drivers most of the H/W will not function

Or will function at reduced level (e. g. VGA - 640x480, 16 colours - for
the video).

If the mfg of the machine has no drivers no one else will.

Not necessarily the case. The individual part manufacturers (video,
audio, network, wifi if it has it, CD/DVD drive writing [should work as
a reader], touchpad, and so on) _might_ have drivers; they usually have
warnings that these are general-purpose drivers and you should get the
better ones from the machine manufacturer. You will need to find out the
exact details of the devices though.

If you want though you could keep XP and just run Win98 in a virtual machine

(Hmm, won't an old XP machine be rather sluggish implementing a VM?)

I'd certainly back up the XP system before trying anything (I don't
think it's easy, maybe not even possible, to implement dual-boot that
way round - especially since the disc is probably NTFS), and making sure
you can restore it from the backup. Ideally, get a separate hard drive
to put the '9x on.

(Philo, did you know you had all those blank lines there?)

If you KNEW that you wanted to run win-98 beforehand, you should have
done some basic research to see if you could get drivers for it BEFORE
you bought it.

Look people. You know I'm a big fan of windows 98.

But even I'm not stupid enough to even want to put win-98 on a mobile
system (laptop, netbook, notebook).

Why?

Because you just won't be able to get it to work.

Any laptop that CAN run windows-98 properly will be an ancient
boat-anchor that I can't imagine anyone putting up with as a computing
platform.

The Dell Latitute D620 has the Intel 945GM / 945PM chipset - and there
never was win-98 drivers for that chipset. PERIOD.

If you are hell-bent on owning a laptop that you absolutely must run
win-98 on, I would recommend the Dell Latitude 600M (not Latitude D600).

The 600M has a 1.4 ghz Pentium-M CPU and Intel 855PM chipset. Our
company bought this laptop (new) back in late 2005 and I was able to
install win-98 on it with all drivers except for the wifi interface
(which was ok because it was intended to be connected via ethernet).

I think it's a waste of time trying to run win-98 on any laptop that was
made or purchased new in or after 2006 - or that has an Intel 9xx
chipset. You just won't find the proper drivers.

Bit of a sweeping statement (-:!

I really meant it. The OP is not going to want to run Win98 with no
drivers available.
A machine that new never had win98 drivers and if there were any ...the
only place left to get drivers is from the manufacturer. All the driver
sites that may at one time have been legit are now full of nothing but
malware.

Virtual machine is really the only way to go

The reason being that nobody wants to run windows in 640 x 480 x
16-color screen mode, using 16-bit hard drive (bios) access, and with no
functioning USB or network interface.

the only place left to get drivers is from the manufacturer.

Technically, you can get drivers from anywhere, not necessarily the
maker of the finished product. So you get the chipset driver from the
maker of the chipset, the video driver from the maker of the video card
or display-driver, etc.

Virtual machine is really the only way to go

You're missing the point.

Anyone that wants to run win-98 on legacy hardware *probably* wants to
do so as the system's primary or only operating system. Otherwise,
there is really no point of running win-98 under a VM on a system who's
primary OS is XP (or higher).

I have a Toshiba Compaq Armada 1750 (400 MHz processor, IIRR) that came
with '98, and on which I run 98SElite quite happily. I don't use it for
much, but what I do use it for - mainly a little downloading - it's
fine.

(Yes, I wouldn't use it as a portable. Although I _do_ like that it has
the power supply built in: OK, that makes it heavier, but means I don't
have an extra brick to lug around, trip over, whatever.)

What would be unusual would be if there weren't any coincidences at all for
several days in a row. Andy Roberts (UMRAt), 23rd. October 1998.

First thing always "todo" is Back on your XP to D:\partition(2)
So you can do a Reinstall of A New XP in C:\partition(1) if needed,
If the install of Windows 98 Do not work we can always go back to XP...

Before Formatting C:\

Do not Format the DRIVE "0"
BUT partition(1)C:\
Do not Format partition(2)D:\

Real-Mode CD-ROM support

The Windows 98 Startup Disk includes generic ATAPI IDE & SCSI CD-ROM
drivers that allow your CD-ROM to function at MS-DOS

Now you need Guy 98
to help you partition(1)C:\
