Default Online virus/malware scanner?

What is the URL for the best virus/malware scanner? Something that is
fast and doesn't leave residue.

Need one for this Win98 system that won't take forever using dial-up.

I ask this group, because time has passed since the best have become
somewhat tarnished and must have been replaced by newer/better ones.

You're kidding - right?

You want to scan a hard drive using an on-line scanner - over a dialup
connection?

If you suspect that certain files are viral, then submit them to
virustotal.com.

Otherwise remove the hard drive that you want to scan and attach it to
another computer as a slave or secondary drive - assuming that the
secondary computer has anti-virus software installed on it.

I've posted links to Norton SystemWorks 2002, which includes Norton
Antivirus 2002, which can be updated to current symantec virus
definition files and scan engine. Look through some of my recent posts,
or ask for the links again.

I have no idea what that means.

Sorry to say it, but many online scanners will not work with WIn9X as
they require NT aspects and its newer files. Phone line would be way too
slow [like an hour or more] for most systems; when the online scanners
DID work in Win9X (with slower processors and limited memory) that was
not unusual.

Got any idea what you might be infected with? You might be able to just
download a specific "fixer".
Or is it that your present system seems messed up and your AV might
have missed something?

Didn't you say there was another computer in the home?

In more words: From memory, years ago there were two outstanding
antivirus/malware scanners. Time has passed. Others have appeared.
Some deemed faster and more effective. The two original ones are
developing tarnished reputations for 'missing' some, and worse as
newer features are added, bogging down a system. Thus, my question:
What is the new whizbang to use?

No, but like health, just thought a good idea to get a second
opinion. Websites are suddenly taking longer than they used to, yet a
lot of data is exchanging hands and I'm suddenly getting cookies from
websites I didn't go to. I only keep around 30-40 cookies, which are
required for login accesses. So, I cull through very often. Always
paying attention to any 'inappropriate' ones. I know facebook and
youtube keep popping up yet don't go there and a whole new series of
what looks like tracking cookies.

True, have 5 machines he 3 Win98 and 2 WinXP, the XP's are rarely
used. Only turned on to convert from something non-Win98 compatible
to something Win98 compatible.

I might as well bite the bullet and go for a Linux based system. What
with that 1 second boot up, open source, and China only allowing Linux
in; sounds like the returns to scale are going to catch up and make
Linux *the* SW OS to be using.

I understand that a lot of the apps right now are a bit shakey, but
hey, does anybody remember Win 3.2?

So, let me rephrase my question: Any good small scanners to scan
individual files as required?

Win 3.2? Last of those I used was Win 3.11

ClamWin?
"ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 7 / Vista /
XP / Me / 2000 / 98 and Windows Server 2008 and 2003."

http://www.clamwin.com/
http://forums.clamwin.com/viewtopic.php?t=2098

Not exactly the highest rated, but the "pickins" are slim nowadays...
open source, GPL, user supported...

"Cookies" are being pressed from adverti$ers, various api, Flash, and
other sources. Want some interesting reading? Look at "Super Cookies"...

Slow loading? There's so much junk, er, extra scripting going on right
now, and off site ads-banners-etc. non-optimized graphics and the like
that it is a wonder anything is remotely secure and loads. Wait until
html 5 is fully implemented along with Web 3.0 activities and "cloud"...
won't be long now particularly as Microsoft's IE 9 will press for these
things being implemented, Chrome right behind or maybe in front of, and
others following.
