You already posted this question and why are you now Cross-Posting this to irrelevant
groups ?

Excuse *MY* cross post, but I can't resist asking you [David] or others
in that forum, if you have any suggestions for 9X users regarding free
A-V protections still supporting the 9X platform, as many of the users
are using AVAST and support is ending.

If not, then which of the PAID A-V are still supporting 9X for the
foreseeable future, or to the best of your knowledge?

Any such information would be greatly appreciated in the
win98.gen_discussion forum.
Again, please excuse the cross-post...

You Cross-Posted properly. :-)

Unfortunately, the world of "An Access" AV scanning for Win9x/ME is coming to an end at
the end of '09 when Avast will stop its support.

I know of no others.

Thanks David, I thought you, in particular, might know of any due to
the years of work on Multi-AV and the like.

I have been trying to locate something reliable and free for them, but
as you state, on-access-free style AV for 9X seems to be coming to an
end. [I won't even ask what you think of Rising..]

Thanks for your response, but before we kill the cross, is there
something you might recommend in the "old style" of manual checking
still supporting 9X?
Like something that could be added to task scheduler for a scan or may
have its own scheduler [not exactly what's need to combat intrusions,
but..]?

OR, and I know you've moved on, a recommendation for 9X of some other
scanner which might work in conjunction with a manual AV?

EST NOD32 has a 9x version AND a DOS version. They are all -
including the current XP/Vista/7(?) version available when you
buy the official current version - which can be purchased at a
discount (but /without/ tech support) from various discount web
sites.

You get the current version and with the same license DL the DOS
or 9x version from one of their sites. They have LOTS of sites
in different countries and some may have the DOS and/or 9x
versions and some may not.

They told me they intend to continue supporting the 9x version -
the daily update files continue to work. IOW, the 9x /program/
itself will no longer be "improved" (bloated, made ugly,
complicated, buggy, in most cases) but the sig files should
continue working.

It's not free but it just happens to be the best. Of course, a
really smart and careful user does not even need an AV program
but everyone's got one, even I... Although now that I see I am
getting dumber every day, I probably need one more than before.

A really smart and careful user will know that an AV is an important
part of the 'trust yet verify' security mantra.

It's most of the other forms of malware that are (or should be) easily
enough avoided.
