Default StartUp Menu Appears At Re-Boot

Hi,

I have Win '98 SE installed and each time that I start my
computer, it always goes to the Windows StartUp Menu
where you can select Normal or Safe Mode. I have shut
Windows down properly, so I don't know why this is
happening.

If you don't change the option on the menu, it will start
up in Normal mode, but I know that this is NOT normal.

If I go to the "msconfig" utility and click on the
Advanced tab, I can can uncheck the Enable StartUp Menu
box and this WILL stop this problem, however, I cannot
then go to Safe Mode if needed by holding down the CTRL
key as I restart.

Please help if you can.

Thanks,
Larry H

TweakUI has a setting on its Boot page that disables or
enables the boot menu.

TweakUI 1.33 - The latest version for all versions of
Windows from 95 to Me and 2000 -

AFAIK, the default is to have "Enable Startup Menu" unchecked.
And that should not hinder you from accessing the Boot-menu
if pressing the Ctrl-key at Bootup. I know i can.

If you can't do that, i think that *that* is the problem to solve.

(1) Hold F5 as you boot to go directly to Safe Mode.
(2) Hold CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu.
(3) Turn on the Startup Menu, ay "START button, Run, MSConfig, Advanced
button".

.......Start...Quote from Windows 98 Secrets (Livingston/Straub).....
Ctrl or F8: Starts the Windows 98 Startup Menu. You need to hold down
the Ctrl key before the DOS bootup process begins. If you have quick
fingers you can press the F8 key in between the end of the power-on self
test & the beginning of the DOS bootup phase.
.......End........

I read somewhere that there is a setting that stops some of the
function-keys (including F5 & F8) from working during bootup. Don't know
if that setting affects the Ctrl-key as well. Maybe that setting is what
the OP must find and revert back to the original state. Unfortunately i
don't remember where/how you did set that in the first place.

Default StartUp Menu Appears At Re-Boot

That reminds me. MSDOS.sys has that ability...

http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q118/5/79.asp
Contents of the Windows Msdos.sys File
......Quote.................
BootKeys=Boolean
Default: 1
Purpose: A setting of 1 enables the use of the function key boot options
(that is, F4, F5, F6, F8, and CTRL). A setting of 0 disables the use of
these function keys during the boot process

NOTE: A setting of BootKeys=0 overrides the use of BootDelay=n.
......End of quote.......

Here is a way to edit MSDOS.sys. This is an important file.

(1) You won't even see it, unless "START, Settings, Folder Options, View
tab" is bolted "Show all files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file
extensions..." too.
(2) Find "C:\MSDOS.sys" and back it up. Call the backup MSDOS.bck, in
C:\.
(3) Then, R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys", Properties, and uncheck Read-Only.

(4) Open it in Notepad, &
(a) Put "BootKeys=0" in the [Options] section
This will suppress the boot keys mentioned above.
(b) Save it & Exit Notepad

(5) Then, R-Clk MSDOS.sys again, and make it Read-Only. Reboot.
(6) Can't reboot? Then, in DOS, copy the backup over the one you've
mussed.
(a) ATTRIB -R -S -H C:\MSDOS.sys
(b) COPY C:\MSDOS.bck C:\MSDOS.sys
(c) ATTRIB +R +S +H C:\MSDOS.sys

OK. Naturally, you will not sue over a bruised knee, either, per my
disclaimer!
