Toshiba has made probably 2,000 laptop models. You are going to
have to give people SLIGHTLY more specific info.

Anyway, all anybody can tell you is to either go to the Toshiba
site, or a site like www.driverguide.com, or just Google with
something like "Toshiba [model#] [device] driver" and cross your
fingers.

The drivers may very well all be on the machine even though "it"
claims it can't find them, but WHERE they are is another story.
Laptop manuf's have an annoying habit of hiding everything
rather well so the average user is forced to go through hell to
get anything running.

OTOH, sometime just letting Windows "search for an updated
driver" on the HD does the trick.

What is the EXACT model of your Toshiba? They may still have the drivers
available for download.

There is no hierarchy. There are no moderators in the MS newsgroups, and
very few messages are removed for cause (profanity, legal issues, etc.) by
the MS administrators.

Microsoft MVP (MS-MVP). The MVP part stands for Most Valuable Professional.
Put simply, people who hang in these groups and consistently answer
questions in a professional manner, MAY get awarded the MVP status by MS. We
DO NOT work for MS (employees and contractors can't be MVPs) , many of us
don't even like MS, and in fact, we tend to slam them when they need
slamming. For more info, see he http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

I was awarded at the end of 1999, and I've spent all my efforts in this and
the other Win98 groups, almost exclusively. Naturally, nobody is getting the
MVP Award for work in the Win9x groups anymore. You don't always know if
someone is an MVP -- it's an Award for past behavior and requires no further
commitments. All they offer are some small gifts (and one large one -- MSDN
and/or TechNet). Besides that, we have a convention every 18 months or so
and have pretty direct access to MS techs. We also tend to participate
heavily in product development via very early beta testing.

Personally, I am repeatedly amazed that they bother to give me the Award
anymore. I used to post a few hundred messages daily. These days, I'm lucky
if it's a hundred a month.

I'm glad you got your issues figured out.

How nice to have someone actually express thanks. You're welcome
and thank YOU.

"forum"

i cant understand the hierarchy of the group.

Not sure what you mean by "hierarchy".

There are people more or less officially qualified to give
advice, like Mr. Terhune, although some of them often just point
you to MS sites for help. Mr. Terhune has actually produced a
(presumably) very useful 2 CD-R set of updates for 98 so he has
done much more than some others.

There are people who are not crazy about MS but use it anyway
because they're too old to learn Linux, like me, who look at
things a little radically in comparison to the MVP's etc. I
point to /other/ sites than MS which usually (IMO) contain
better and less biased info. Not to mention MS pages are huge
and difficult to wade through (not unlike some of their
products).

There is the occasional poster who just thinks s/he knows the
answer - sometimes very useful, sometimes a total waste of time
or worse.

There are people who know an awful lot but post VERY rarely.

The person who has solved problems that bugged me for YEARS and
others which no one could even scratch at is Franc Zabkar (hope
you don't mind the public endorsement, Franc).

What is the meaning of MS-MVP Shell/User, which Mr. Gary
used ? i assume MS - Microsoft
MVP Shell/ User means wat ?

MVP - Most Valuable Professional - a (non-monetary) "prize"
title given yearly to people who have given (presumably) very
good support (on and off MS internet forums etc.) to users
trying to find their way through the "logical" and "quality"
software MS produces and sells at vastly inflated prices.
Sometimes I think the title is fairly meaningless, sometimes I
think it's a pat on the back to people who toe the line,
sometimes I think it is well deserved. Who knows.

Shell/User - no idea.

Shell is one of the terms for the Windows graphical interface,
user is user, what the combo means I know not but I am sure
someone else will enlighten us.
