Default rundll32 error

I'm getting this error when trying to add a printer:

RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in
module MSPRINT2.DLL at 0167:79d71a2e.

I've tried reinstalling rundll32.exe and msprint2.dll.

This happened after trying to install windows me and then trying to
reinstall windows 98.

Help appreciated.

I don't suppose it's much help really, but IME, rundll32 usually gets the
blame for something else not working - so many things call it that when one
of them does so wrongly, rundll32 gets the blame.

Reformat your system and then install the OS of your choice. Your system is
irrevocably messed up after what you did to it.

No, it's not true. Formatting does very little to the disk. It just wipes
the file allocation tables and rebuilds them. What you are probably
referring to is the thorough scan of each cluster for integrity that is done
automatically after a formatting (in Windows/DOS, anyway.) In fact, that is
a GOOD idea, and tests your HD for problems. Exercising the disk in this
manner is a GOOD thing. If the HD can't handle a thorough scan, it's already
near dead, but a thorough scan is otherwise harmless. It doesn't cause
damage, it only finds it. Not something I'd normally do every week, or even
every month, (takes a LONG time!) but I've formatted and reformatted most of
my HDs, and or performed a thorough scan (using Scandisk) many dozens of
times (in the hundreds in some cases), with no adverse effect. I have yet to
have a HD go bad on me, though I have run into a few on other machines, and
I only got into the game ten years ago, so I can't speak to earlier
hardware. The ones I have in use now (about ten) are all well over five
years old, and I REALLY work them out on a regular basis.

Still, if you're worried, kill the thorough scan. With the Windows/MSDOS
command, you use the /q ("quick") switch:
format c: /q
