Cross-posted/Followup set to WinME General newsgroup.
Kevin, because you didn't uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME, you've now got what the WinME pros waves to Noel, MikeM, et al. call "version soup". Keep that OE backup handy and don't delete anything you want to have in OE from your ISP's mail server. The only way you're gonna get straightened out is by uninstalling and reinstalling IE via the steps (all of 'em!) on MVP Noel Paton's page: http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm Please post all followup to the WinME General newsgroup. You're in much better hands there, Kevin. Once you're straightened out, you should be able to import your backup into OE without a problem and then download messages on the server. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE) & Security Kevin22 wrote: Robear, Only reinstalled WinME from the OEM disc which brought me back to IE 4. Did not uninstall IE 6. IE is currently at 6.0.2800.1106 and OE is at 5.50.4133.2400. Have noticed another problem in Express. All my folders now include 2 of each message. So should my steps be: -Clear out sent items and Deleted Items. (Can't do inbox since it is inaccessible.) - Compact all the folders and back them up. - Uninstall OE & IE. - Reinstall OE & IE. - Import the folders back in. Then I should be good? Thanks for your input. Kevin "PA Bear" wrote: Try compacting all OE folders. See below. (Ideally, you would have compacted them before creating the backup.) General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. Possibly unrelated to your current problem: Was IE6 installed prior to the reinstall of WinME? If so, did you uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME? Used the program suggested in the OE6 Discussion group. It was at www.oehelp.com/oebackup/default.aspx. I was able to backup the messages, but could not correctly restore them using that program. Basically I did the following steps. - Updated Outlook Express to 6.0. Next time it was started all messages that were in my email were automatically downloaded. (Had not meant that to happen.) - Moved the files in the Inbox to a 'Transfer' folder to prevent them from being written over. - Tried "oebackup" to restore without success. - Did a 'drag and drop' of Inbox.dbx to test it. That was the bad move. Have received error messages when going into Inbox since then. - I was successful in doing an import through OE from where the email folders were saved. Clicking on the 'Inbox' currently says "Folder Could not be Displayed: Possible causes Low Disk Space or Low Memory". Trying to receive messages gets "An unknown error has occurred.........No, Error Number: 0x800C012E". Tried a reinstall of OE without success. Sorry this wasn't shorter. Thanks for anything. Kevin |
