Default Compressed Files and Folders Option Missing

Compressed Files and Folders

I use Windows Me. Some time ago I was able to compress my files by choosing
the following key strokes: Select (highlight) file or folder, then click
File, then click Send To and choose Compressed Folder. Or, I could click
File, then New, then Compressed Folder.

In either case, a compressed folder icon would appear.

Now, when I use the same key strokes, the words “Compressed Folder do not
appear. It has disappeared. How do I get back the option for Compressed
Folder?

I have tried Detect and Repair listed under Help in Microsoft Word.

Thanks,
Jerry

Glad to hear it - and thanks VERY much for the feedback!! (it's surprising
how many people forget to let us know whether a suggestion worked, or not!)

Makes sense but it's not there. I have heard that if any other zip programs
are installed this feature is disabled, however I haven't installed any other
such programs.

Did you try uninstalling and then reinstalling Compressed Folders? I'm
not clear from your reply whether you did this or whether you just checked
that Compressed Folders were marked as installed.

That option was not available in Win XP component options, however I did find
a solution as follows:

Click Start, Run and type (or paste):

rundll32 zipfldr.dll,RegisterSendto

In the background, a 0 byte file named Compressed (zipped)
Folder.ZFSendToTarget will automatically be created in the
%Userprofile%\SendTo folder.

This worked just fine.

Ye gods! - That OP was dated Nov 2005! (ands it's in the MS archive
still??? - have their retention policies changed?)
Thanks for picking it up, Mike
Seems that Don is actually using XP rather than ME, so my original
suggestion was not really relevant

That's not at all surprising since you are in the wrong newsgroup. This
is one supporting those still running the legacy Windows Me operating
system, hence the "windowsme" rather than "windowsxp" in its title.

I'm pleased to read that you've solved the problem. Re-registering the
zip folders file would have been my next suggestion but is not usually
required for those running Win Me.

Sorry, I had no idea that a general search would lead me to the wrong
operating system.
