Desktop & taskbar (quicklaunch) icons lost - how to repair ?

Suddenly almost all of my desktop and taskbar icons were reset to a default
windows-icon. Every icon that is clicked will open a pop-up window that will
ask with what I want to open it with. It seems all the file-associations have
been lost. I have spent hours trying to find a solution on the internet and in
newsgroups but all the solutions pound will not help.

Also restoring a former backup of my registry will not help.

Has anyone got a clue what to do ? (except form re-installing windows)

Download Tweak UI from http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui
Note the installation instructions on that page. After installing, it'll
be in your Control Panel. There's an option to rebuild icons.
