Default Wildly accessing Hard drive

After about 5 minutes of sitting idle, my computer starts
to wildly access the hard drive. The only way I can get
it to stop is to hit "Ctrl Alt delete" to bring up the
task manager menu. As soon as I close the menue it starts
accessing the hard drive again. The computer is 3 years
old and this problem just started. Any suggestions?

What are the settings for your screen saver? If you have a complex
screen saver such as "web shots" installed then it might be the screen
saver preparing to cut in.

Other possibilities are a virus or spyware item.

Make certain that your antivirus software is completely up to date
with the virus definitions not more than a week old and do a complete
virus scan of your hard drive. Then get a "second opinion" by doing a
free online virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

For possible spyware related issues follow MVP Jim Eshelman's Quick
Fix procedure at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Good luck
