Default Help Needed - W98 + KB834707 + no mouse

Ever since I installed the above MS patch (may be coincidece) I have
been unable to use my mouse (Intellimouse). I have tried downloading
the latest driver, but this doesn't seem to work. I have checked the
physical mouse and that is OK. Sometimes, when the PC is at the login
screen the mouse will work (sometimes erraticly), but then stops when
it starts loading applications as part of the login procedure.
Othertimes the PC warns that there is no device attached.
Any ideas???

Reboot to Safe Mode.
Right click MyComputer
Click Properties Device Manager tab
Remove any/all instances of the mouse
Close out and reboot.

Windows should redetect/reinstall the device.

I see, Windows Update now offers to me...

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
(KB834707)
Download size: 2.8 MB, 9 minutes
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise a computer running Internet Explorer and gain control over
it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from
Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your
computer. Read more...

....BUT, your report gives me pause. Anyway...

(1) Did it seem to complete it's install?
(a) Did it request a reboot to complete it's install?
(b) Did that go well?
(c) Did the computer work for a while after that?
(d) How did you "(try to download) the latest driver", with all of
this going on?

(2) At a DOS Prompt, enter...
DIR /a C:\WINDOWS\Wininit.ini
....If found, enter...
REN C:\WINDOWS\Wininit.ini Wininit.bad

If you now can boot (CTRL-Alt-Del to try), open "C:\Windows\Wininit.bad"
in Notepad, & post it. (Wininit.ini is the file Windows uses to
"complete" an install during a reboot, when files that are "in use" must
be replaced.)

(3) I don't know whether KB834707 is still trying to install. But here
is how to play with the Mouse. I'd really hate to do it myself in the
middle of a failed install, though...

(a) Boot to Safe Mode.
(Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the Startup Menu.
Alternatively, turn on the Startup Menu at "START, Run, MSConfig,
Advanced button.)

(b) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".

(c) Open the Mouse branch, & Remove every Mouse driver in it.
If there were more than one (& just one is plugged in), you had a
"ghost".

(d) Reboot to Windows Normal Mode.

If it does not automatically detect the mouse at that reboot, you will
need to reinstall it the way you originally did.

CAVEAT: I have a "Readme" that says (speaking of a Device Manager remove
of the mouse)...

.......Quote..............
Windows 9x and Windows NT 4.0 have the ability to load device
drivers without running the Setup program. Loading the devices
drivers this way, however, does not install the user interface
programs such as the Logitech Enhanced Mouse Control Center.
Using the "Have Disk" function will install only the Logitech
mouse drivers.
.......End of quote.....

GEEZ, should I try that one-- KB834707?,

Did you try KB834707, Brian A? I'm trying to figure...

• An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer 6 SP1
(873377) - Update rollup 873377 includes security update 834707,
documented in Microsoft security bulletin MS04-038, and Internet
Explorer 6 SP1 hotfixes released after security update 832894
(MS04-004).
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;873377
....Quote....................
SUMMARY
Internet Explorer 6 service pack 1 (SP1) hotfixes that were released
after Microsoft security bulletin MS04-004 may not be included in the
834707 security update that is documented in Microsoft security bulletin
MS04-038. Update rollup 873377 includes the cumulative security fixes
that are in security update 834707. Update rollup 873377 also includes
Internet Explorer 6 SP1 hotfixes that were released after Microsoft
security bulletin MS04-004. Update rollup 873377 is available from the
Microsoft Download Center. You must install update rollup 873377 if you
require one or more of the Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (Version
6.00.2800.1106) hotfixes that are listed in the...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...n-us;873377#18
"List of fixes included in this update rollup" section.

Note If you are not running Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (Version
6.00.2800.1106), you do not need update rollup 873377. Instead, you can
install the 834707 security update that is documented in Microsoft
security bulletin MS04-038. The 834707 security update for other
versions of Internet Explorer includes hotfixes that were released after
security update 832894. The 834707 security update also includes the
cumulative security fixes that are documented in Microsoft security
bulletin MS04-038.
....EOQ of article..........

I wonder whether I should have taken 873377 instead of 834707, but
873377 was never offered at Windows Update. GEEZ. I guess I don't have
any of the symptoms in that "List of fixes...".

So, well, here I go... I'm taking 834707 now!
