Default 'no disc' when disc is in CD-RW

I'm unable to burn CD-R using Iomega Predator USB on my
Thinkpad 600x that is running Win98SE; the only result is
message 'no disc' in the drive, even though a blank CD-R
disc is in the drive.

Is some setting wrong or a driver missing in Win98SE. I've
downloaded and installed Iomega's driver for Win98.
