Default Spool32 error

Whenever I click on Printer from either inside the Control Panel or using
Start|Control Panel|Printers, I get the below error no matter if I'm in
Normal or Safe Mode:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Spool32 has caused an error in Kernal32.dll

Spool32 will close now CLOSE
------------------------------------------------------------
I click CLOSE and PC locks up. Have to do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE then it shows:
Printer (Not Responding)
----------------------------------------
I then click End Task to clear error window. There is a Canon BJ printer
showing there and I want to remove it and add a Lexmark but it won't allow
me to do either.
Any help or suggestions?

Try replacing spool32.exe with a fresh copy from the Win Me cab set.

spool32.exe is contained in WIN_17.CAB of the Win Me cab set and can be
replaced by booting to Safe Mode and using MSConfig | General | Extract File
.... and following the prompts. The "cab" files are in the Win9x folder on the
Win Me CD and also in either C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or
C:\Windows\Options\Install. See MS KB 265371 - "How to Extract and Replace a
Protected File in Windows Me" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=265371) for
details of how to extract files from the cab set.

Mike,
I found the Win_17.cab file in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, but how do I get
Spool32.exe extracted from it? I follow the instructions of the KB article
but when I get to step 6 of it, am confused on what to put in the "Restore
From" box. I put Win_17.cab, not work.

Use the folder containing the cab files not the cab name. Alternatively don't
use MSConfig at all but instead use Explorer, browse to WIN_17.CAB, double
click to open, select spool32.exe and drag a new copy to your desktop. Now
boot to Safe Mode and drag the copy of spool32.exe from your desktop to your
windows\system folder.

I'm sorry but I have difficulty in understanding your post. What exactly do
you mean by "no go". What did you try and what was the error or are we
perhaps expected to try and guess? vbg

Mike,
I tried you suggestion on previous post and was still getting same error.
Sorry about using "no go", but had been working on PC all day and had got
frustrated, not at you or your suggestions, but just at the PC.

The problem is I still don't know what the "no go" refers to. Is it that you
can't replace spool32.exe or, as I suspect, that replacing spool32.exe doesn't
fix the problem?

As for feeling frustrated Willy, that I do understand. Been There, Done That,
kicked the cat (no, I would never do that) and got the tee-shirt.

All I can suggest now is that you try uninstalling and reinstalling the
printer causing you the problem. I know you can't do this from Printers but
is there possibly an entry in Add/Remove Programs? Alternatively have you
tried Safe Mode?

Regards,

Mike,
I've tried Safe Mode and if I just click on the printer, I get the error
noted earlier. Also there is nothing in Add/Remove programs for the
printer.
I can replace spool32.exe but it doesn't fix the problem.
Note, the PC belongs to a friend and I worked on it, adding RAM & cleaning
up so to say about 6 months ago, it worked great then but he has since added
AOL 9.0 to it. I did a Google search and saw nothing of relevance that
would help other than your suggestions.
