Default Antivirus Program for Win98SE

Greetings:

I've been using Win98SE and given my situation, I really don't want to
upgrade to XP or whatever. I've been using Norton Antivirus 2001 but
now the program tells me I have to purchase a newer version. When I
purchased the newer version, I found it extremely slow (my computer is
a Pentium 3 850). Is there a decent antivirus program out there that
runs under Win 98SE and isn't slow?

Thanks.

Avast is one such. Free for home use.

Recent developments suggest that AVG is falling behind in its
nasties--removal abilities. That's why I didn't add it to the list. Specific
discussion involved S*t*r*a*t*i*o*n*/*W*a*r*e*z*o*v (remove asterisks that
are required to get by the NG server's filters.) See "When I send outgoing
mail I get This erros." thread in microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general.

Still, I should note that one or more of Avast's real-time scanners can
seriously impact performance on older machines. I forget which, so it's up
to the user to experiment. The one(s) that need to be disabled aren't
necessary, just more of the usual redundancy that's so popular these days.

Thanks,

I went with Bitdefender v10. So far it seems really good.

One I haven't tried. I'm really behind on my AV ware knowledge. Gonna have
to experiment with the recent crop to come up with a new list of
recommendations.

Good luck!
