Default Standby/STR/ACPI problem

Using Win98SE & all available updates. 256Mb ram. Gigabyte GA-BX2000 M/board
with Intel 440BX AGPset.

I can't seem to set my computer into 'standby' mode or possibly it is going
into standby and I can't 'wake' it up. This has worked in the past but not
since a full re-install. Curiously the 'Standby' option was available via
the Start Button-shutdown menu but when I tried it the whole thing froze
with a slightly grey desktop and I had to hit reboot. Following this the
'Standby' option was no longer available so I followed the Gigabyte BIOS
manual and reset the ACPI by setting 'ACPI SUSPEND TYPE' to suspend to ram
in Pwr Managment Setup. And via device manager-device settings-plug and play
bios which I guess added the Advanced Configuration & Power Interface (BIOS)
entry and installed 5 files from C:\windows\inf\machine.inf.

I now no longer have the 'Plug & Play Bios' option in device
settings........is this right??

Also, via control panel the Power Management Properties the options are;
Home/Office Desk, standby-never, Monitor-never, Hard Drive-never. Under the
Advanced tab the Power Button option is set to Shutdown but pressing it does
nothing, I have tried this reset to Standby but still nothing happens. The
third tab here is 'Hibernate' which I've not seen before and don't
understand what this is if it's different from standby.

Whether I try to set standby via the 'Shut Down' menu or setting 'Standby
after eg 20 minutes' it may actually be going into standby but I can't seem
to wake it. Proir to the re-install it would wake via any key on keyboard or
any mouse movement. The BIOS-Pwr Management Setup says; modem
ringon-enabled, Alarm-disabled, PME event Wakeup-disabled. In BIOS
intergrated Peripherals the PS/2 mouse pwr on is Disabled and Keyboard Pwr
on is set to Power key (absent from keyboard). There is a multikey pwr on
option (untried). Not sure if these are related to standby or if these are
to power up from cold.

Sorry for the longwinded explanation but any help appreciated.

It may have removed itself due to two failures in a row. Now, perhaps do
not go absolutely nuts inside Device Manager. It can be quite a shock to
see Windows continually reboot, should you remove too many devices at
once. Also, there are those who passionately say, Standby is not worth
the trouble it is to recover.

Windows help describes manual standby vs. automatic... I'm not clear here...
maybe someone knows/can help??

I would think manual standby, would be either the shut-down dialog box or
pushing the sleep key on a power keyboard which I have, right?

Automatic, therefore... would be user defined, using advanced tab on
screensaver option tab in the Display settings?

Now, if I use the sleep key, my puter goes into standby w/no message.
But, if I use the shutdown dialog box... my puter just turns back on almost
immediately.

It goes on automatic standby which I have tested, this is a test... enter
for 2 mins. go on standby, watch & wait!! I get a dialog box in 2 mins.
saying, "computer is preparing to go on standby" and I have an option to
cancel. And, the puter goes into standby.

***My settings are, advanced tab... standby in 1 hr., turn off hd in 1 hr.
and turn off monitor in 45 mins. This works, no problems.

On my P-3 puter, I could use both manual options, I'm almost sure I was able
to. Shouldn't I be able to use either my manual keyboard or the manual
option is shutdown dialog box as desired? I checked bios pwr. mgmt., I see
nothing I should change.

Just Curious Star

But, if I use the shutdown dialog box, my computer will not standby.

Sounds like you understand it just about right. Well, I say:

(a) Manual is either the keyboard Sleep button
or the "START, Shut Down, Standby" requestor, &
(b) Auto is "Control Panel, Power Management, Power Schemes tab",
where it may be set to happen by time.
(c) The "Advanced tab" says it controls what happens upon pushing the
computer's power button, either to shut off or go on Standby. So, that
is another manual method.

I always get the "computer is preparing to go on standby" when I do it
manually. It could be happening so quickly for you that you just don't
see it. It's been so long I can't quite recall whether the message shows
when Standby is entered automatically. I turned that off at the same
time I turned off ScreenSaver, after discovering something was
restarting my Scandisk/Defrag's. I only miss the ScreenSavers.

Yea, sometimes, it immediately comes back out of Standby here too. I
wait a few seconds & hit my Sleep button again. Rarely will it refuse
twice in a row. I don't know whether it was always so, but after waking
my NUM Lock is turned off. So? I just turn it back on.

So many have posted problems with Standby, & MVP's have spoken ill of it
often enough, that now I do it sparingly. But I still do it! Generally,
I close all open windows first.

If you do not have Standby at "START, Shut down", then, perhaps...

That is,

(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, & look in the right pane.
(c) Do you see anything there? What?

Although it is not specifically mentioned below, I can think there is a
possibility of something that would remove Standby from the Shut Down
requestor.

WARNING: Do not get carried away in the Registry. It is very important
to the proper functioning of Windows. Muss it badly, & you must boot to
DOS & "Scanreg /Restore". Then, choose the date of the last successful

Double-click the new entry, select modify, and add this value: 01 00 00

Sounds like you understand it just about right. Well, I say:

(a) Manual is either the keyboard Sleep button
or the "START, Shut Down, Standby" requestor, &
(b) Auto is "Control Panel, Power Management, Power Schemes tab",
where it may be set to happen by time.
(c) The "Advanced tab" says it controls what happens upon pushing the
computer's power button, either to shut off or go on Standby. So, that
is another manual method.

* *You have a power keyboard, you can choose the sleep key and/also the
shutdown dialog box and your puter will go into standby, correct? I'm sure
my P-3 did that too. Now, the shutdown dialog box doesn't do it, puter turns
back on. The keyboard sleep key does work for me.

* *What happens when you use the dialog shutdown box, you see standby? Does
it work?

So many have posted problems with Standby, & MVP's have spoken ill of it
often enough, that now I do it sparingly. But I still do it! Generally,
I close all open windows first.

No, don't worry; it's normal NOT to have that Policy Key. I don't have
one. Well, here is another set of Policies...

"START, Run, PolEdit".

Likely, it won't be there, or you'd have known to do that. So...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=147381
How to Use System Policies On a Standalone Computer

I don't have that one, either. I'm just thinking it may have a policy
for it. However, just as likely it does not.

(1) What about those "Standby" URL's at MSKB, posted a while ago?
(2) Anyway, the keyboard Sleep button is more convenient. Perhaps stick
with that!
(3) How does it look at "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab", any
red/yellow ?/!'s on any of the icons? (Those can be tough to deal with,
though.)

Hi Tim.

I don't know if I can be of much help to you... but I will share what I've
esperienced.......see *'s.

Using Win98SE & all available updates. 256Mb ram. Gigabyte GA-BX2000

M/board
with Intel 440BX AGPset.

I can't seem to set my computer into 'standby' mode or possibly it is

going
into standby and I can't 'wake' it up.
And via device manager-device settings-plug and

play
bios which I guess added the Advanced Configuration & Power Interface

(BIOS)
entry and installed 5 files from C:\windows\inf\machine.inf.

* First, from what you are describing, I believe you puter is going into
hibernation and not standby. When I was running a P-3, using a Jetway mobo,
I DID have the hibernation feature/tab in Display. I tried it out, I could
not wake the puter period, yet I knew the puter was running. This was
several yrs. ago, but I do remember, finally, I just had to push the restart
button on the puter. My experience w/standby is the puter WILL wake easily
as described by you!! When the puter is on standby, the green led light will
flash if it is functioning correctly.

* My P-4 does not support hibernation, I don't have the option.

* My P-3 would do this... using/choosing *standby option* in shutdown dialog
box. Following choosing standby, another box would appear on my screen,
computer is preparing to enter standby... and I had a option to cancel,
before the bar showed completion of the progress or process.

* I don't see this on my P-4, immediately the pc enters standby. I didn't
have a power keyboard w/my P-3. I do now and can power on my pc using the
power button on keyboard. My puter easily goes into standby when I push the
sleep key on my keyboard. However, and I just found this out... doesn't
make sense to me, but w/my P-4 and using standby in start/shutdown dialog
box WOULD not work... my puter turned of and restarted immediately. I
found out last night, I decided to try again. BUT, before I did I did a
ctl. alt. delete and I ended ALL tasks, mainly my Epson printer, but a few
others too that were running, Stimon, Rnapps, etc. I went to shutdown and
picked standby and the puter immediately went into standby. I don't
understand why the sleep button and the dialog box/standby option seem to
have different requirements? I read somewhere about Epson printers causing
problems... evidently this was my problem in using the start/shutdown dialog
box. My Epson software causes me many other problems too.

Star

I now no longer have the 'Plug & Play Bios' option in device
settings........is this right??

Also, via control panel the Power Management Properties the options are;
Home/Office Desk, standby-never, Monitor-never, Hard Drive-never. Under

the
Advanced tab the Power Button option is set to Shutdown but pressing it

does
nothing, I have tried this reset to Standby but still nothing happens. The
third tab here is 'Hibernate' which I've not seen before and don't
understand what this is if it's different from standby.

Whether I try to set standby via the 'Shut Down' menu or setting 'Standby
after eg 20 minutes' it may actually be going into standby but I can't

seem
to wake it. Proir to the re-install it would wake via any key on keyboard

or
any mouse movement.

Tim Whiteaway
