The "PCI Ethernet controller" is your network card. Install drivers for it
and things should straighten out pretty quickly.

Actually the XP machine should be able to recongnize your ethernet card and load a driver for you. You may have to look at your ethernet card on your 98 machine and go online to download a driver for your card. Or your Windows XP Installation disk may have a version of the driver that you can use.
Just download the driver file to your desktop. Scan it for viruses. Create a temporary folder on your desktop to hold this file. After the file is in this temporary folder double click on it . Most of the time these files are a compilation of several files and you have to "uncompress" the file to get to the .exe or .ini file that is needed for installing the driver.
Then go to the Start Button, Control Panel click on system, hardware, device manager, network devices, network adapters, double click on your adapter and click on add network driver. Then when prompted type in the path to the driver on your desktop (in the new temporary folder).
If you are just networking two machines you could actually bypass the hub/switch and connect the two machines together(through your ethernet cards). Just make sure that you use a CAT5 or CAT6 crossover cable (available at most electronics stores).
Good luck.
