Default disk error on ME install but not XP

When trying to reinstall ME after a clean format i receieve a serious disk
error when setup begins copying files. A new partition was created using
fdisk.
What I dont understand is that windows XP setup was run on it to test the
drive, and it installed with no problems. I have tried a few utilities to
scan the drive and none of them have shown any problems.

The drive seems to function normally except when ME tries to install, can
anybody point me to any potential problems?

Sounds more like it's a problem with the installation media than with the
PC - have you tried reading it another PC?

The error message is "a serious disk error has occured. r for retry"
Retrying doesnt help. It happens when setup begins copying files.
No I havent tried the disk on another machine, but there is no obvious
damage to the disk itself.

Have you installed WinXP before trying WinME?

When installing WinXP did you by any chance format the HDD in NTFS?

If you didn't and used FAT, I would also point to CD problems raher than
HDD, as Noel posted.
