I was trying to upgrade my windows 98 powered laptop to
windows xp, when halfway of the process my monitor went
blank, what should I do, can I still retrieve the stored
datas in my computer?

On the XP CD, there is an Upgrade Adviser. Run that to see if your laptop
can run XP in its current configuration.
