Default File Type Problem

My Win/98 PC has suddenly decided that it can't open .jpg
extension files by double clicking, even though it managed
to do it for five years. Instead of selecting PhotoEd to
view the JPG image, I get the error message: "This file
does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in My Computer by
clicking Views and then clicking Folder Options."

However, when I try to create the file type for .jpg file
extensions, I get the error message: "The extension '.jpg'
is already in use by file type 'jpgFileHandler'. Choose
another extension." but there is no file type
jpgFilehandler displayed in the long list of file types.

I have looked at every file type listed, but none of them
show that they are associated with the file extension .JPG.

How do I get around this Catch 22 situation?

Any help gratefully accepted with thanks.
