I can't access any of my folders. Help!

I was typing up a report recently when my computer shut
down. When I turned my computer back on, I tried to
recover the document. The computer called the
file "corrupted" and recovered some of it. However, now
any folder I try to open responds with this
message : "Microsoft Internet Explorer has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down. Please contact a
vendor." Then, it also responds with this message: "An
error has occurred in Internet Explorer. Internet
Explorer will now close. If this problem persists, please
restart your computer." I can access nothing except for
the internet and some documents I posted on the desktop.
What should I do? I don't want to delete the entire
program and reload it. Is there any other alternative?

Explorer and Internet Explorer are closely locked together.
Try Internet Explorer Repair Tool.Start/Run type
Msinfo32.exe
go to Tools/IE Repair Tool.

I'm sorry to say that the repair didn't work. My computer

Last time on my machine that IE repair frose halfway was
because IE was corupt. Uninstal IE to it's previos version
and then reinstall IE6. You will end up needing the tons
of updates and security patches again.
Have you tried running AdAware? Deleteing anything it
finds and reboot and run it again until the search comes
out clean.
If you know of a good repair shop and would feel more
comfortable to have them fix it? Then by all means do so.
Alot of malware out there causes Windows not to function
in a manner as what you describe.
Always keep your AV program updated. But do not depend on
it's auto update.
Do it manually a couple times a week.
If you have to reinstall your system. I would suggest with
a fresh install to download and run HijackThis. That
way...what it finds is what is mostly needed to boot
windows. You can then put the first findings into
the "Ignore" list. And after that when you run HijackThis
if it shows anything? It will probly be something you
don't need or want on your system. UNLESS you downloaded a
program that put an entree in the Startup menu. That you
may want to keep. And you would just have to add that to
the ignore list.
Once you get the innitial start up list,safely,in
HyjackThis' ignore list. The program is less likely to
kill your system. As opposed to running it for the first
time after a few months of internet travel and downloads.

If the repair didn't work, I would try an overinstall of IE.

This may not be an answer.
But yesterday after virus difinition update. My AV program
found a trojan that it did not see before the update.
Darn it...I have the program set to purge it's logs at
midnight. I think it was something like "msrvt.32dll"
trojan.
Good reason to update AV on a regular basis. Like daily.

Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more
than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows
Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.
