Antivirus software for 98
What type of antivirus software do people using 98 use now that Norton
and AVG no longer support 98? My 98 machine still outperforms my XP significantly. |

Don't be a jack-ass by multi-posting.
Why didn't you cross-post instead? Jack wrote: What type of antivirus software do people using 98 use now that Norton and AVG no longer support 98? There are no "drive-by" vulnerabilities that affects Windows 98. Never has been. And most of the malware that tricks users to perform the installation doesn't run on Windows 98. So right off the bat, the need for AntiVirus software for Windows 98 is basically zero, and has been for at least the past 3 or 4 years. Norton Anti-Virus 2002 is probably the best and least resource-intensive AV program for win-98, and it can still be updated by downloading the Symantec Intellgent Updater package. This brings NAV 2002 completely up-to-date with the most recent virus definitiona and scan engine. If you can't find NAV-2002 on a torrent and you really want it - let me know. I can put it on a torrent or a download site. If you are seeking an antivirus package to perform on-demand scanning of suspicous files (that you might acquire from the net) then I suggest that instead of seeking an AV app, that you submit suspicious files to virustotal.com where they will be scanned by 40 different AV programs. My 98 machine still outperforms my XP significantly. Because Windows 98 runs all apps in i86 Ring-0, has no cumbersome privledge or security accounts model, and runs on the faster FAT32 file system, it's a natural result that it's a faster operating system compared to the bloated NT-based OS's. |

Guy,
Thank you for the reply. Sorry about the multi-posting. I really like my 98 machine better than my xp machine. My only complaint is that my 98 machine is only a 433mz and is very slow in playing youtube videos. Do you know of any way to improve that? Also, I am using IE 6 and a number of web sites have said that they will not work on IE6 shortly. Any advice on that? Thanks again for your help. For probably $250 you could purchase a used pc (probably off-lease) at your local surplus electronics store and install win-98 on it (assuming it was made no later than 2005 or 2006). Or look on e-bay, kijiji or craig's list for a used PC that dates to the 2004 or 2005 time-frame (or 2003 if you want to be on the safe side). I'm assuming you're looking for a desktop PC - not a laptop. Any desktop PC made during that time-frame will be compatible with windows 98. If you don't have a win-98 CD, it's readily available on a torrent. The best you can do with your existing machine is to add more RAM (bring it up to 512 mb) and maybe change the CPU to a faster one. Also, I am using IE 6 and a number of web sites have said that they will not work on IE6 shortly. Any advice on that? You should have abandoned IE6 2 or 3 years ago and switched to Firefox. Why didn't you? You need to download Firefox version 2.0.0.20. That's the last version that is compatible with a "standard" installation of Win-98, and I really haven't come across any web-site or web-content that can't be viewed or rendered with that version if Firefox. |

Thanks for the suggestion about Opera 10.10. I downloaded it but I

One web site said that it is not recommended to download it from a web site but I do not have the backup cd. What shall I do? What do I do? Thanks Unless you have the ME version of msimg32.dll installed you may or will get errors or inabilities UNLESS you disable the functions which it is needed for. MOST download sites try offering the XP version; these seem to cause anomalies in the graphics for many so make sure you locate the ME version if necessary. If you have a WindowsME original CD, you will find the file inside the compressed cabinet file Win_12.cab. You can open the cabinet file using WinZip. IF NOT then look for the ME version to put in Win98SE systems. Put this file in /Windows/System folder of your Windows 98SE installation. If it gives an error of file in use then: 1. Place the new file in C:\temp or wherever you download [adjust the below commands to your folder/directory needs] 2. Boot into command-prompt mode by pressing F8 quickly after BIOS/CMOS screen [or your manufacturer logo] and selecting command mode. Or you can choose restart in Ms-dos from shutdown menu. 3. Rename old file, command - ren c:\windows\system\msimg32.dll c:\windows\system\msimg32.old 4. Copy new file command - copy c:\temp\msimg32.dll c:\windows\system\ As for your other issue here with the fault, it can come from improper INTERNAL coding in the Flash object or other formats OR calls made from within them to other system inclusions; *AND/OR* follow this recommendation and read the below from other posts of mine regarding HOWTO: Flash/ShockWave un-installation - cleanup - re-installation - security settings and WHY: http://secunia.com/community/forum/t...2_old_versions Also note this posted on secunia [you can find similar in most browser and/or security forums]: QUOTE from secunia--- AliceWyman 1464 posts In case it helps, some users report malware as the cause of this error: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=328474 Bug 328474 – Plugin performed an illegal operation (Shockwave Flash) {Fixed by Windows Update Trojan removal} Related MozillaZine forum topic: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...7661&start=150 Shockwave Flash error As for installing an older Flash version to work around this error, you are inviting problems since older versions are vulnerable to a number of security exploits, as described he Secunia advisories for Flash Player 9.x Vulnerability Report: Adobe Flash Player 9.x Secunia advisories for Flash Player 8.x Vulnerability Report: Macromedia Flash Player 8.x Sun 11 of May, 2008 05:36 PST # END QUOTE from secunia --- I would add to that posting for removals of old or wrong versions and incompatibilities, AND for updating generally; save yourself some time and run a search on the disk(s) for other versions which might be used PRIOR to re-installing [use a registry tool to locate any spurious entries also]; AND what I recently posted for AFTER re-installation; microsoft.public.security.homeusers: ---QUOTE MEB Did you follow the procedure of completely un-installing; the cleanup [including possible manual deletion]; and then the re-install as shown in the forums? One thing I have done, however, is set CCleaner to clean out Macromedia "cookies" (or whatever they're called) whenever I run it--and I run it at least once a day. Any suggestions for the settings I should use for Flash? Uhm, not unusual, you find very few who recommend setting up the Flash environment or even know about it, go figure as it is a particularly vulnerable area. As usual, it depends upon your needs and desires. Mine [when I have it installed] go with the least abilities and with warnings, and no saving, but many would think I'm overly cautious. That link does have some help and descriptions available on the various settings. For instance from the help for "Local Storage Settings": --QUOTE "What kind of data can an application that runs in Flash Player store on my computer? The kind of information stored depends on the application. Information can be anything from your user name to your current score in an interactive game to a list of stocks in your portfolio. The application should make it clear what kind of information it wants to store. Who has access to the information? This information may be accessed by an application that is currently running in Flash Player or by another application that runs in Flash Player on the same website." --END QUOTE This, of course, ignores the potential hacks you may encounter on the Web, like [from one of my posts over on Win98.gen_discussion]: ---QUOTE MEB *XSS*, sometimes referred to as CSS {not the web page design activity CSS} though web page CSS can be used to inject or exploit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting which can employ cached materials access, and can be initiated immediately upon server access [prior to actual page load] during initial negotiations. *CSRF/XSRF* - Cross-site request forgery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_request_forgery http://www.google.com/search?&q=XSRF...ty&btnG=Search potentially worse *JAVA and JAR* vulnerabilities and standard controls can be used http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ty&btnG=Search http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ts&btnG=Search is there anyone who still doesn't understand the problems with JAVA and its abilities. *SSL* exploits http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ts&btnG=Search enough vulnerabilities and exploits STILL exist that one should NEVER use the same browser incident for any other usage. *FLASH* exploits http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ts&btnG=Search okay, so MAYBE you missed the little games that use it AND some of which have used the exploitable coding environment, but how could you miss the rest of the exploits, they are plastered almost everywhere... *ShockWave* exploits http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ts&btnG=Search ditto *Browser cache* exploits http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ts&btnG=Search often over-looked, and even by those who THINK that a clean-up at browser shutdown or some other time is sufficient,,, nono, not good enough... Also make sure to set other limitations in your specific browser and system/OS. Guy, Thank you for the reply. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |
