Download Service Packs and Updates
There is no such thing as a Service Pack for Windows Millennium Edition
(ME) - Updates are still available via Windows Updates (much to everybody's surprise) for the moment, but no new ones have been created since July 2006, and no more will be available in the future. OTOH, if you're talking about Windows 2000 (W2K), then you're in the wrong place -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk "Mark" wrote in message ... Download Service Packs and Updates
Thanks for the info.
But I want to download the "updates" from the website, not Windows Updates. I am reinstalling my friends WinME operating system but she has no internet connection. I want to download at my house and put on disc to take there. Unfortunately the options available to you may not be what you want however you need to remember that Win Me is now some years out of support with the extended support phase having finished in June 2006. What you require is the old v4 Windows Update Catalog where you can search for and download updates which can then be transferred to another PC. However the v4 Catalog can only now be accessed by PCs running the legacy Operating systems, Win 98, 98SE and Win Me since PCs running more modern operating systems such as for example XP are automatically passed to the more recent v7 Windows Update Catalog site which no longer includes patches for Win 98, 98SE or Win Me. -- Mike Maltby |

There is/was a Win98 MVP - Gary Terhune (sometimes visits the WinMe group,
but not seen him for quite a while) - who has produced a copy of the Security Updates CD (for a very modest fee) and wrote in March of 2008 :- quote My Updates CDs are now ready to go. One is a copy of the Security Updates CD from 02/04, the other contains everything since, with a few minor exceptions. No IE 5 or 5.5, only IE6 SP1. Good for Win98, 98SE and ME. Anyone interested should email updates RemoveThis @grystmill.com -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com unquote Might be worth a try? Mark!!
Note that the FIRST update to install, however you elect to do it, is the 290700 hotfix for System Restore. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290700 otherwise System Restore won't work for the rest of the updates - and it really is essential! ramble /on Hmmm - interesting! playing around with Google, I can find the downloads using the search string millennium hotfix "download available" site:microsoft.com unfortunately, this produces a list of 687 downloads! Ah! - a better search is millennium hotfix retired site:microsoft.com this produces only 270 results! g ... and there are still a few where the advice is to call MS for the hotfix - which isn't likely to get a good response from the Support people nowadays! ("ME?? wassat? Win2K?? - which SP is installed?") Introducing another term reduces the hit rate down to 152... millennium hotfix retired kbhotfixserver site:microsoft.com This still introduces a few mis-hits, but it should at least be manageable? - how many are missing, I have no idea! I may see about putting a list up on my site - adding it to my to-do list! g - with direct links to the relevant files. The problem there will be to separate out the essentials from the unneeded/irrelevant (how many ME boxes have 1394 ports with problems?). If anyone has a definitive list, I'd be interested. (I'll ping Gary and see what he can let me have). I'm not sure what the legal situation would be about hosting the files themselves on the site - even if I weren't worried about the security and cock-up aspects. ramble /off If any of that helps, then great -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk "Mart" wrote in message ... Hi Noel,
If you want to contact me 'off-group' (via Mike if necessary), I do still have a copy of the MS 'Security Update CD (Feb 2004) which covers most of the essential updates (inc. the 290700 hotfix). Thanks, Mart - I already have a few copies of it
There were a few updates that weren't included in that, though - mostly for IE6, but I want to check whether my listing is complete, so I'll ping Gary (and Mike) and see what they have as a list. -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk "Mart" wrote in message ... Access the v4 Windows Update Catalog using Win Me (or 98 or 98SE), running
in a VM if necessary, to check which patches are still available. One that I know has only ever been available from the WU site and has never to my knowledge been listed in either the Catalog or the Download Centre is the update to MovieMaker. -- Mike Noel Paton wrote: Thanks, Mart - I already have a few copies of it There were a few updates that weren't included in that, though - mostly for IE6, but I want to check whether my listing is complete, so I'll ping Gary (and Mike) and see what they have as a list. |

Download Service Packs and Updates
These are the links for the Security Update CD updates (more or less):
http://website.lineone.net/~shanebeatson/fixlistme.htm Last time I tested these links they still worked - much to my surprise - and I just now tested one and *it* still worked. Probably one or two don't anymore, such as DirectX and Internet Explorer, being for versions out-of-date even in Win Me terms (but excuse me if I don't test them all myself!). Also the CD only updated to October '03 so there are about another dozen or so to acquire after running these. Actually, given the fact it's probably pointless leaving the site up without having links to the later updates, I think I'll go find them. Get back to me if you want, say, a list of the download urls for post-Security Update cd updates. Shane "Mark" wrote in message ...
