There's something deeply ironic in swapping a less safe OS version for
a less fixable OS version, which is otherwise the case with +SP2.

You won't hear any arguments about that from this direction Chris. :-)

http://cquirke.mvps.org/whatmos.htm covers that for those who realise
the importance of a mOS. For those who see the HD-based OS as it's
own mOS, see http://cquirke.mvps.org/nomos.htm instead ;-)

Having recently been bitten, but fortunately not too badly, by an NTFS
problem that I could only fix by eventually deleting the partition/volume
and starting again ... problem being that a directory had got entwined
with four small text files contained in the directory and no tool would
touch it so had to pull off the 80GB of data in the volume across the LAN

Good thing the OS still booted and ran - or did you Bart it?

and even with just that one directory and the four entangled files was
still unable to fix the problem until I deleted the partition and added it
back in again.

You see, that's the sort of insane file system corruption that is
assumed never to happen, but does. A simple bad exit that interrupts
sane operations is what AutoChk and transaction rollback expect to
see, and that's what they are geared for. But if instead, etc.

When will OEM/DSP SP2 hit the streets? New stock is still SP1a :-p

You're probably going to know the answer to that long before I ever do.

It's odd; usually we see new OEM/DSP stock that's up to the new SP
release at the sime the SP's released; sometimes earlier. I suspect
this time they knew it would be rocker than usual, and held back.

I'd rather they'd held back on the free update CDs and WU, as it's far
easier to manage SP2 on a new PC than on a "live" one!

I want to have RC on HD, in SP2. How do I get that right? Do I have
to create my own SP2 installation CDR, or will even that fail?

-- Risk Management is the clue that asks:

"Why do I keep open buckets of petrol next to all the
ashtrays in the lounge, when I don't even have a car?"

It was a data partition with no system objects located on it so nothing
special was required other than having fortunately having lots of spare
disk space to hand.

Chris, I really almost the last person to be able to provide any sensible
advice to you here. Sorry. I'm progressively getting less involved and
heading back to being just another home user. To some degree I'm a little
surprised that I'm still posting here as I had originally intended
withdrawing from these newsgroups at the beginning of this year.
