Default hosts file

I need to know the a-b-c to getting a hosts file working.

My windows directory is not named windows.

I have followed the web instructions. Internet Explorer still brings up a
file that i tried to put in there for 127.0.0.1. It is
"solitairecentral.com"

Any ideas?

Jim:

127.0.0.1 is the IP address used to identify "Self" on the network so
that will only get you back where you started.

If you want to use the hosts fle to get to solitairecentral.com you need
a utiklity called DIG. assuming you have a DNS server on your network
(Your ISP provides one) you can use DIG to convert
"solitairecentral.com" into the correct IP address.

Try he

http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/network/utilities.shtml#dig

They report 209.68.53.211

Thanks for your response, John.

I do not want to get to it, i want to disable the ability to get to it on
the web. That is, i want to turn the IP back to local, where it does not
exist.

I am using an ISP-supplied proxy and the "bypass proxy for local addresses"
is checked in IE tools/Internet options.

I have a Freecell addict here. G

Thank you for your reply John.

The problem I run into is with this (from first URL):

~~~~
"Important To use the HOSTS file for name resolution, the Enable DNS option
must be selected. To do this, use the DNS Configuration tab in TCP/IP
properties in the Network option in Control Panel. "
~~~~

I have tried enabling DNS and it causes other problems. I made the change
on (and then un-changed it) on the TCP/IP Dial-up Adapter. There was a
thread in this group last fall and the consensus was that enabling DNS was
not necessary for a HOSTS file to work.

Of possible import is that I DO have a proxy server at 8080 from an ISP
supplied dial-up "accelerator".

It seems that I read somewhere that the spacing in the file was important.
Viewing my example in fixed-width font will show the exact spacing -- or
perhaps more easy is for me to say that I have two spaces between 127.0.0.1
and localhost as well as the entries.
