Default Gateway loaded with ME, AOL, DSL, Ethernet PCI Card issues

I have a Gateway PC (Over 3 years old), pre-loaded with ME.
For the past 3 years have had AOL as my ISP. Have decided
to go to DSL provider SBC and need help. The software that
SBC sent said I needed an Ethernet PCI card. Went to the
store, bought one and hubby installed it. Ran the SBC/DSL
installer and it looked like it worked, but now my PC
freezes up. I think I am missing a step in changing
configuration parameters on my PC. Does anyone have
step-by-step instructions on how to get my PC to use this
Ethernet card and DSL modem in lieu of an old dial-up
modem. I'm just NOT getting it. Do I need to run a
program or something on my PC? Thanks for any help!

What brand & model DSL modem do you have? Does it have only an ethernet
port, or does it have usb, or does it have both?

Also, what about the software drivers for the ethernet card?

Hiya Chief!

To answer your questions:
1. DSL modem has been provided by the provider of the DSL
service - SBC (aka: Ameritech). The model mfr. is
Efficient Networks, the model is SpeedStrem 5100. It has
an ethernet port (they provided the cable) and it has a
DSL port (they provided the cable). The ethernet cable
plugs into the back of my PC and the DSL cable plugs into
the phone jack.
2. The enthernet card I bought is: MFR: Elements. The
model is Realtek Chipset w/PCI 2,2,ACPI, W.O.L. - 10/100
Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter. (Don't ask me what all that
stuff means!) It says on the box that it has driver
support of ME.
Hubby installed the card. The driver came on a floppy.
When he booted the PC back up, Windows came up, discovered
the hardware, and installed a driver (I guess) - it didn't
allow him to download the driver that came with the card.
I still think there's somthing else I need to do (control
panel-wise) to stop Windows from trying to use a dial-up
to AOL. On my Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections
Tab - in the box that is labeled "Dial-Up and VPN
settings" it says "America Online". Could this be the
problem? What do I do next?

I don't want to mess up your computer anymore than it is already. I
would highly recommend calling SBC DSL Tech Support.
