Default Win98 FreeCell & Solitaire problems

Hello,

I have desktop icons for both Win98 FreeCell & Solitaire, but if I click on
them I get "An error has occured in your program" with "Close" and "Ignore"
buttons, neither of which do any good. Also, there are no FreeCell or
Solitaire icons in the directory under Programs\Accessories\Entertainment.

Is there some way to open the CAB files and make new copies of FreeCell &
Solitaire?

Thank you

Bill

Hi,

In the control panel, open add/remove programs and go to the second tabs
about windows component. now double click on accessories and uncheck games.
Apply, now go back and check the games once again. see if it helps.

Regards,
Roy

If other suggestions don't help, here's some of the things I've
noted over the years.

There are many reasons for MS games to quit working. Did you recently
get a Windows Update or other software update? A few cause Solitaire,
Free Cell, and other games to fail.

The MS site has several possible helpful documents such as:

Err Msg: Solitaire Caused General Protection Fault in Module...
[Q234430]
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q234430

General Protection Fault When Starting Microsoft Solitaire [Q237900]
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q237900

Problems Running FreeCell And Solitaire with Office XP Installed
[Q304402]
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q304402

More often it's a 3rd party program, especially AVs, in particular
McAfee and AVG for some users. I have a list of dozens of programs
which I won't both to post. Use the process of elimination to find
out which software package may be causing your problem. Untick each
program in msconfig, one at a time, then reboot. This should reveal
if 3rd party software is your problem. Don't overlook ANYTHING that
is running. It is a slow process but most often successful.

Here's one of the more unusual reasons I've seen:
~~~~~~~~~
My Brother-in-Law (BiL) just had and solved this problem. Went through
all the suggested fixes of Office XP or Norton CleanSweep or conflicting
startup programs or un-install/re-install games, etc.. Nothing worked.
Cleaned up TEMP files, emptied Temp Inter. Files (IE Cache), reduced "My
Documents" below 100 objects. Still no go with FreeCell.
Then BiL stumbled across his solution because he and his wife could no
longer play games and he had time to kill. He had over 500 emails in his
OE in-box and many 100's more saved in other mailboxes. These had a lot
of big attachments like .jpg and .gif files. He started cleaning out his
mailboxes and moving attachments off the HD to CD-R.
After all this OE mailbox cleanup, Freecell works!!
It may be OE 6.0 that is the problem that others attribute to IE 6.0. It
seems for my BiL that mailbox bloat in OE killed Freecell and gave him
the "FREECELL caused a general protection fault in module CARDS.DLL at
0001:00000a0f" error message.
You may want to cleanup your OE mailboxes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

To answer your question, 'if' your files are missing or damaged,
they belong he

Freecell.exe c:\windows 66.cab
Freecell.chm c:\windows\help 23.cab
Freecell.cnt c:\windows\help 25.cab
Freecell.hlp c:\windows\help 49.cab

Sol.exe c:\windows 67.cab
Sol.chm c:\windows\help 24.cab
Sol.hlp c:\windows\help 49.cab

I'm not too optimistic that bad or missing files are your problem.

I store a copy of the entire CD on my HD in c:\Win98, so files
in cabs are easier to get to, as when I run SFC checking for
replaced or removed system files. I can copy files directly from
my cabs to any location I need. It also allows me to use the MS
Find function to locate them by typing *.cab in Named, the file
I'm looking for in Containing text. Then click Find Now.
