| Hi all,
|
| I'm giving my old laptop to my disabled sister, who is on a fixed
income.
| It's a Toshiba Satellite 1605CDS. It will be her first computer (she's
46
| and very smart). She's most interested in being able to stay in touch
via
| email and to explore the internet (dial-up connection - like PeoplePC -
| will
| be her only affordable option). I'm in Florida and she lives in
| Massachusetts, so I'll be shipping it to her location via FedEx.
|
|
| I use an older version of Zone Alarm
| version 6.1 on my win98 machine and it runs fine
|
| you should be able to get it here
|
| http://www.oldversion.com/
|
|

Hi philo,

Great website, now bookmarked. Question. I saw this version also: ZoneAlarm
6.5.731.0 (13.0 MB). Is there a way to tell, before downloading, if 6.5 will
work on Win98SE?

....Going back to poke around some more. Thanks!

Cheryl

|
| BTW: even if you do not use Internet Explorer on the machine you should
| install IE6
| then go to the windows update page and install all the critical updates

I don't know if 6.5.731 will work on win98

but i stopped with 6.1.737 because I had trouble with the newer versions...

but the problem might have been on my end

..

That was going to be my next question. How to go about updating Win98SE as
far as I can before support stopped. :-)

Thanks again. I appreciate the tips!

The first thing you must do is install IE6

once that's done..there are about 23 (or so) critical updates still avail
from Microsoft

I have another question for anyone who knows. Thanks for your patience.

On a fresh reinstall of Win98SE should (can) one uninstall IE 5.x first
before installing IE 6.x, or is simply installing v6 over v5 acceptable?

Thanks
Cheryl

As soon as win98 is installed
all you need do is directly install IE6
(there is not even an option to uninstall IE5)

reboot and go to the updates page.

Thanks philo. Thought so. That's what I did on the other computer. Just
wanted to confirm I did it right.

Thanks. I use Avast! (free) on my desktop and was going to put the same on
the laptop so I can help my sister more easily. I've never tried AVG, but
from my experience it seems to be recommended as often as Avast!.

I have a few more questions related to the fresh install of Win98 on this
laptop that I'm giving to my sister. May I neatly list them here or should I
start separate posts for each question? They're simple questions.

Yes Avast is good too, it's on my girlfriend's computer and she's had no
problems.

You might as well ask all your questions in one post if it's a short enough
list
