Notepad, a very generic editor, generally for writing notes.

Wordpad can handle the file sizes that Notepad cannot and it
can colorize text as well as display graphics.

MSWorks Word processor, currently you can find/buy 7.0, but
since I have used 4.5a in the past, I much prefer it.

There are other word processors from other vendors.

I suggest OpenOffice.org Writer, a part of the OpenOffice.org
productivity /suite/. OpenOffice.org is completely free (open
source) and competes with Microsoft Office.
It is available for download at http://www.openoffice.org/.

With OpenOffice.org Writer, you can open, edit and save docu-
ments:
- in its own format (OpenOffice.org Writer Text Document);
- in the format of Microsoft Word;
- in the Rich Text Format (RTF);
- in StarOffice Writer Text Document format; and
- in the HiperText Markup Language (HTML).

I have a 33.3 kbps Internet Dial-Up Connection.
Please wait by my replies with patience.
