Default How large a hard drive can Win 98 support?

As the subject line says whats the biggest drive it can
support. My hard drive died and the shop put an 80GB in
it and i bought Win XP home edition but too many of my old
programs wont run properly with it so want to go back to
Win 98 where they all work fine.

However it only is recognising 10GB of the drive at fromat
time, how do i rectify this or can't i?

Thanks Mark

Windows 98(SE) supports harddisks up to 128GB (137GB decimal) as long as
the Bios of your computer supports the size.
Some people are using larger disks than 128GB but MicroSofts advises
against this.

QUOTE
Hi Jeff,
I checked with BrianB some time ago about this and the word he got from
the W98 people is the disk size, not the partition size, is what
counts--that using a drive over 137 gb can result in data loss.
I don't ever plan on buying a drive this big so I guess I will never be
able to test it myself.

There is a new version of FDISK available to a partition a harddisk
bigger than 64GB in Windows 98(SE).

Fdisk Does Not Recognize Full Size of Hard Disks Larger than 64 GB
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q263044

You have to select "Support for Large Disks" in FDISK to be able to use
partitions larger than 2GB with FAT32.

I'm using 80GB and 120GB harddisks with Windows 98SE without any problem.

You're using the older version fdisk. It will wrap at 64GB and start over
at zero. 10GB is accurate as a result (64 + 10). 74.55GB is actual
capacity of my WD 80GB HD to help you understand the numbers. The newer
version fdisk will wrap at 128GB, as the MS KB article indicates, is also
the limit of the HD capacity it can address properly. Others are indicating
an individual is advertising the newer fdisk 128GB HD capacity limit as
something new, when its been in the MS KB article all along.

I also recently had to reinstall Win 98 SecEd. due to a
Trojan Virus, and I have a 40GB drive and it's only saying
I have 14GB. Within DOS, it says I have 40. I would also
like to know if there is a way to get total use of the
entire drive.

The figure would be around 128GB.
Thanks for heads up.
My 200GB HD is partitioned 99.9 GB and 86.2 GB. 45GB usage for both, rest
is free. I didn't use fdisk for partitioning. How about yourself?

OK I'm chasing this thread as I just bought Seagate 160GB for my
win98SE, it only sees 21 GB I'm guessing this is left over from 2 X 64GB
overruns, I can get the fix off microsoft to 137GB, but are you saying
that it will die nastily when it gets to this point even if I partition it.

See www.48bitlba.com. Very complete discussion of the problem. You can get
away with it until you try to write beyond the 128.5G point, evidently due
to the way 48-bit lba is made to subsume 28-bit lba. You need both a BIOS
that is 48-bit lba compliant, as well as a 'fix' for w98. You can get both
if you use a Promise Ultra100 TX2 PCI adapter, which will also have the
'driver' to allow you to use the rest of your disk. Don't try to use FDISK,
though. BING works, and I expect PM, as well, though I haven't tried it.
If your MBD BIOS supports 48-bit, then use Rudolph Leow's patch (also
mentioned on the above site)--it's only $10, though I haven't used it
myself, he makes a free version which will work on a volume up to 145G--to
allow you to see if if works for you--and you can download that
http://members.aol.com/rloew1/. He explains how it works and how to use it,
but your BIOS must support 48-bit LBA addressing.

Hope this helps,
Joe
