Last Call: Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition Support

Microsoft has officially begun requesting that users running Windows 98, 98 SE and Millennium Edition (Me) upgrade their operating
system as soon as possible. The Redmond company will cease all public and technical support for the products on July 11, 2006,
including all security updates.

"It's surprising how many consumers or businesses still use these older versions, particularly Windows 98. Their continued use
partly accounts for an extension of support for about an additional 18 months--from January 2004 to July 2006," Jupiter Research
senior analyst Joe Wilcox told BetaNews.

Recently copied, stripped drivers, added drivers on a moved 98SE,
motherboard/cpu/RAM upgraded. Then installed XP on the first partition.
3rd party boot manager. Did this to ease the transition for the owner. So,
only half of the PC is officially supported by MS.

Think the only support that the public needs is defense/fixes against
internet intrusions on the OS itself and IE/media player/OE and so forth
regarding non-XP. Commonly known as critical updates. Many new versions of
AVs no longer support pre-XP dos based versions MS OSes. However, some of
the previous version AV engines still are provided AV definitions for
current baddies. Don't know if that is going to die soon.

Yes, there's many seniors out there living on fixed incomes. Some have hand
me down PCs, pawn shop PCs, and just plain old ones they had when they last
worked before retiring. Sad, but true. There is no money in supporting
that, so MS and Bill are doing the corporate thing regarding lack of profit.

Microsoft is Microsoft-oriented, not customer-oriented.
They would rather fight than listen. They will always fight rather than
listen.
It doesn't matter if it is a foreign government or one small voice
in the vast wasteland that is Usenet.

If you aren't 100% Microsoft through and through, you are the enemy.

Over two years ago, I forecast here that, if Microsoft didn't wise up
and start taking better care of its existing customer base,
then another company will do it for them.

Specifically, I wrote:

Since then, of course, Intel did wise up, Apple has switched
from the IBM Power PC chip to Intel chips to Intel processors,
preventing AMD from snatching their crown, leaving IBM asleep
at the wheel, despite IBM having a great new chip of their own.

Apple has also introduced an emulator to allow people to run Windows apps
on an Apple, firing a warning shot across Microsoft's bow,
which they will probably ignore, as they think that they are far too big
to go down the tubes.

General Motors probably thought that way at one time, also.
Today, Warren Buffett could buy GM using his pocket change.

Longer term, this will probably lead to the dethroning of Windows as
the market leader, as people look to shuck the speed burden
imposed by the emulator. The natural choice will be Apple's Mac OS X.

Given the public, corporate and governmental animosity
that Microsoft has built up, and well-earned, over the years,
it may be a trickle at first, then a snowball, then an avalanche
which will bury Windows deep in the history books.

So, Microsoft can "officially request" that I upgrade all of the copies
of all of the Operating Systems which I bought and paid for.

They can do that. They have done that.

They could also have noted that the only current option available
from Microsoft is XP.

They could have done that. They have NOT done that.

They could also have noted that they currently have a plan in place
and ready to go to announce the end of support for --- Windows XP.

They could have done that. They have NOT done that.

Unlike many people who cannot afford to do so,
I could upgrade to Windows XP.

I could do that. I will NOT do that.

Anyone been in an Apple store recently?

Crowded, aren't they, and it's not all Ipod buyers either.

You'd think, possibly, that "Bill Gates will never let this happen".
Well, BG has plans of his own, and they are more focused
on a post-Buffett Berkshire Hathaway than they are on MS.

This will all fall on deaf ears, but I care not.

That's a sad story... very sad... indeed. BUT I continue to vow I will
not worry, until me 'n Win98 begin to crumble to dust. And I'm only...
well, I'm JUST a tad/so beyond... halfway there! Don't you worry,
either!

Please be aware that MS planned to end support for Win9x in Jan-04 and MS
MVPs lobbied successfully for the two-year extension.

I must go & watch "Lost" now. Looks like a lot to explore. I'm getting red X's on that first page for it's links (but they work). R-click, Show Picture, puts a square/circle/triangle in it for a moment only. I am checked for "Show pictures" in "Internet Options, Advanced tab, Multimedia section". Am I ill?

Why do people (like experts, sys admins, etc) think that the "end" of
"Official" support of Win-98 by M$ automatically means that on that
date, all Win-98 installations will magically stop functioning?

There have been very few critical updates to Win-98 itself over the
past few years (most updates are for OE). None of them were really
necessary to keep any or all win-98 systems operational, and all
currently-functioning win-98 systems will continue to function beyone
the July/2006 date.
