Default CD Burner not working

The CD burner came with the computer when I purchased it.
It was already installed and working. Worked for a couple
of years, and all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore. I
can see it in the device manager as "PHILIPS CDD4801 CD-
R/RW". When I double click the icon when it's in the MY
COMPUTER window, it says insert disc even when there's one
in it. It doesn't recognize any types of discs anymore,
and doesn't recognize that there's even a disc inside. I
saw somewhere that uninstalling it and reinstalling it
might work. I tried to uninstall it by going to the
device manager and clicking remove, and then it said to
restart computer in order for it to take effect, so I did,
but when I restarted, it was back on the device manager
list, and working the same. So I guess it didn't
uninstall. Don't know what to do, please help! Thanks a
lot in advance =)

Can the drive read a commercial CD such as your Win Me CD or perhaps a
commercial audio CD? If the drive is unable to read a disk this might suggest
that the problem is with the hardware and that the drive needs to be replaced.
Do you have another PC you can use to check out the drive? If the drive still
can't see a disk when inserted then you will need to purchase a replacement.
Fortunately the cost of CD rewritables has plummeted in the last couple of
years so it shouldn't be too painful.

Hi Krystal,

You may want to reboot into safe mode and remove all instances of the
offending hardware and reboot and let it reinstall the correct drivers.

Have you downloaded the updated drivers, BIOS and firmware updates from the
CD Vendor (Phillips) web site?
