IDE Controller Error (Code 10)
My CD-ROM and CD-RW drives no longer appear in 'My Computer' (Windows ME).
In Control Panel, the primary and secondary IDE controllers are marked with an exclamation mark on yellow background, and the Properties button show the device status as "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all tghe drivers installed (Code 10). Try upgrading the device drivers for this device." I believe this may have occurred around the weekend of May 29/30, when I was wrestling with a Windows Explorer problem (see the separate thread - "Explorer caused an error in unknown"). I presume something I did must have upset the drivers. Having checked other threads on this subject, I've tried to remove the drivers for these devices, so that they're re-installed on startup, but they still show the same error. In fact I had to remove the master IDE controller, as the primary/secondary controllers were identified as part of a multi-funciton device. I believe the hardware is OK as the lights still show on boot-up, and I was able to boot from the installation/recovery disk. Any ideas as to what I could try? |

boot-up, and I was able to boot from the installation/recovery disk. Might be worth confirming this both in your BIOS and in Real Mode DOS using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk. Oh dear, I forgot to mention that the diskette drive hasn't worked for some months, and I'm not sure where my startup disk has gone anyway.
The only thing I have is the recovery CD that came with the machine. By selecting CD as my boot device (an option if I press F9 on startup), it gives me optiins to recover drivers, reinstall Windows and reformat the disk. I've tried the first to see if that would recover situation, to no effect. Boot to Safe Mode,

I've found the answer!
I was looking at MS KnowledgeBase under 'IDE Drivers' and I found a reference to the fact that Windows ME includes generic drivers for CD drives using protected mode, but not real mode (whatever they are). I thought I'd seen something under MSCONFIG about real mode, so I went back and had a look under the 'Advanced' button. Sure enough there was an entry entitled 'Force Compatibility Mode Disk Access'. Right-clicking on this indicated that it forces disk I/O to go through real mode. It was checked, so I unchecked it. Restart, and hey presto - back come the CD drives! I can't remember specifically changing this, but I suppose I must have done. To sum up for those that find themselves in the same position (MVPs please feel free to use this advice in future if you think it's relevant). Run MSCONFIG (Start/Run) Select 'Advanced' button Ensure that 'Force Compatibily Mode Disk Access' is NOT selected. Save and Restart. Just to re-iterate - this applies to Windows ME There are four morals to this tale: 1. If something says that it's for advanced users, it probably means it. 2. If something goes wrong, it will very often be the nut behind the keyboard that's at fault. 3. If you're trying to fix a problem in Windows, make a not of everything you change. 4.
