A better file search tool
Is there a better file search tool than the one that comes with Win98?
I want one that will search by the file extension. For example, I want to find a file containing the word "beatles" and want only the .MP3 files. In the built in "finder", when I go to "Advanced", it wants me to specify what program is used for MP3 files. Which in my case, I have numerous programs that play music. There must be some add-on utility that allows for simply searching for a word and the added file extension. Thanks |

Thanks the built in tool is just fine for search parameters just enter *.mp3 for example I have over 4000 MP3 files. And 99% of them are in one folder called "Music". All that is gonna do is show all of them. That's not much help. I may as well just go to that folder and start looking manually. |

The file-find ability that Windows 9x/ME has is far superior to any that came with any windows-NT based version (2k, XP, Vista, 7, etc). I want one that will search by the file extension. For example, I want to find a file containing the word "beatles" and want only the .MP3 files. In the built in "finder", when I go to "Advanced", You will not accomplish what you want by going to the Advanced tab. The way to perform your search is to enter this into the "Named" field under the "Name & Location" tab: *beatles*.mp3 That will find any file that ends in .mp3 that has "beatles" anywhere in the file-prefix. If you believe that the text-fragment "beatles" actually appears somewhere in an mp3 file, then to search for any such file you put this into the "Named" field: *.mp3 And you put this into the "Containing text" field: beatles I'm not sure if mp3 files contain text (such as artist) in such a way that it would be visible as plain text, but there's no harm in trying to look and see if that search gives you what you want. Ok, now we're getting somewhere. That works great. I was not aware of putting the file-prefix in stars. I only knew to use the old dos *.mp3 command. And if I search for ALL EXTENSIONS with a certain filename I might get thousands of unrelated file types. For example, I was looking for REM (the band REM). I got words that contained REM such as REMind, REMington, REMember, and so on.... Thanks |

Doesn't for me. _________________ If you believe that the text-fragment "beatles" actually appears somewhere in an mp3 file, then to search for any such file you put this into the "Named" field: *.mp3 And you put this into the "Containing text" field: beatles I'm not sure if mp3 files contain text (such as artist) in such a way that it would be visible as plain text, but there's no harm in trying to look and see if that search gives you what you want. If they have tags - either ID3V1 or ID3v2 - and if the tag has "beatles" in it, the file will be found but it will take a long time as the search has to examine the entirety of each file. -- dadiOH ____________________________ Winters getting colder? For general searches, AgentRansack is good. http://www.mythicsoft.com/page.aspx?...sack&page=home ___________________ For mp3 specific searches, an MP3 datbase program would be good. There are many, some good, some less so. Some much less so. I happen to like MP3Stock because it is fast and builds a minimally sized database. It is old, seems to be no longer supported but still available; however, it is tied to Winamp. It works very well with Winamp, is useless otherwise. http://mysite.verizon.net/xico/Stock.zip That is a direct downlad of a zip from a website I used to have. It still works.
