1. how to get rid of "suspend" 2. a GREAT utility (no, not for IE)

: I have SO many CD's with previous C: setups (going back 8-9 years) and misc backups that I should just take them and destroy them all and be done with it. I have way too many albatrosses. And you know what happened to the guy who shot one of those, right? I learned to never throw stuff out, if it's as thin as a CD. Hard disks have even greater data density which makes it easy to justify keeping all. I just figured out I'm better of it it's there, so long as I don't have to think about it. I'd sure have to think about it one day if it were gone. |

: The idea makes sense, it's just pointless because it's slow and easily broken. It is great on PDA's where the OS always runs, but a hardware button switches the machine on and off like a light. Let's not even get into all that portable ****. When I leave the house, I put on a watch, a pen (AKA biro), Sharpie, and little plastic cutter knife in one pocket, my wallet in the other, and that's it. I quit with PDA's. But the old Psion Organiser II XP is vital for me often enough. Run logs, best calculator ever (despite lacking the odd function), and so it goes... It's so basic, but so effective that explorers and aircraft carriers still use them routinely, I read somewhere.. No-one's beaten them yet, after 25 YEARS. |

: OK, so X98 is a super-mini version YOU are writing... All below is beyond my ability to comprehend. I finally understand what you are doing, and bravo. When will you make it available to the plebs? Hell, I'm concerned that the people who will get it UNDERSTAND it. Which is why I don't want to screw it up. If plebs were the only worry, it wouldn't matter. I could make the core and inst bits available now, but they might change enough, as I learn more, that doing it could undermine the decisiveness of the business. Ideally, I want to get it right, use it, release it, then walk away, let people do what they want with it. |

: What I can say is that that when I first tried OpenBSD and saw their modular selection of modules at install time, I knew that W98 should be like that. Fortunately, it CAN be. As we can't audit and edit code (even if I had the abaility at that level!), I can't gurantee that like OpenBSD, it's 'secure by default', but this is as close as it's possible to get, and it's also as easy an install as I've ever seen. Nor I with understanding it. Who cares about security. Ya gets a firewall and ESET for 98 and you're done (this assumes you already have a working brain). Sometimes a machine feels safer if we know it's not got a network stack to break at all. If I made some DVD ripping machine (I can't watch DVD's on my underpowered systems, they are light on energy but need XviD to balance quality with low CPU demands to show movies), I'd be happier is I knew that no unwanted functions were lurking, slowing it down, risking general borkage. Taking out whole unwanted chunks of OS is especially gratifying... |

: Well, from that ONE sentence I finally understood what you are doing., Had you said, months go "I am writing the smallest Win98 ever" I would not have kept wondering. Again, bravo. Thankyou. Although, I did mention it a few times.. There are smaller ones. I started with three of them, not one worked as described, they all had various errors or omissions, but once I got a workign one based on their bits, the Game was definitely Afoot. It's all grown out of that, building up from parts. All other methods like 98 Lite worked downwards, removing chunks, always leaving other chunks for fear of breaking it. To me that seemed very messy. |

: What could be smaller than REST2514? That looks very tidy. I'll say nothing more about it now, it will take some testing before I know if I want to keep it. I will say that I had been using 'Recover98', a small slightly hacked tool a guy in Germany got to me in Napster's prime. I was experimenting with MP3 headers and other binaries as payload to sneak them through Napster. He got it to me that way. It rules, but REST2514 may be even neater. It will take me a while to know... |

In the meantime, I'm gonna DL Recover98. It probably won't work on 98SEL. -- There's nothing here to attract existing fans of either bands. Instead, all [Rhino's compilation] "Total" does is to reinforce the idea that Joy Division/New Order was a hugely exciting source of music between 1978 and 1990 and New Order has been a pitiful shadow of their once-visionary selves ever since. It will take me a while to know... I don't think you're talking about this: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/U...Maintenance_an d_Repair_Utilities/Recover98.htm That's a $170 500KB program - and while it can undelete individual files, it is designed for major recovery from a crashed or file system corrupted-HDs, and stuff like that, and it will take HOURS to do it. I haven't tried it yet, but unless you shell out the $170, only 3 files can be recovered with the demo version. And if this is anything like the other programs I have, it will search the ENTIRE drive before it lets you choose what 3 files to recover. A ROYAL PITA. There are quite a few of those around - R-Studio is well known (and less than 1/3 rd the price), there is Easy Recovery, etc. I've had Easy Recovery for ages, it's a 5MB install and it works great - it once recovered the vast majority of a crashed HD. But it took about a day - it was a slow computer, but still... Totally different animal. If there IS another Recover98, let me know, But, being driven CRAZY by the stupid REST2514 "no dll" bug, I have searched, and there is almost nothing out there except a few expensive programs which don't work as well. -- There's nothing here to attract existing fans of either bands. : thanatoid wrote in : If you cant get it to unzip/etc, I'll post it unzipped, although I don't see how that would make any difference. You tell me what to do. If it just saves and restores desktop icons, no worries, that's one thing I did solve. So why did you ask about software for it and, more importantly, HOW did you solve it? BTW, since you mentioned recover98 in another thread, this is what I have: http://www.krollontrack.com/resource...ree-downloads/ The professional version, except mine is from 2000 and 6MB installed, while the NEW version of 'pro' is a 50 MB **download**. It's also US$1,500 PER YEAR. Yes, you read correctly. Of course, I dl'd my version from the Usenet ages ago, for free. I only needed to use it once. Systray crashes are another thing... Unavoidable, unless you are a magician. The 3-finger salute to MS coders is not a big deal. I do it even when nothing is wrong - it's always nice to do something complex on a freshly-booted system. Windows was NOT engineered to run for more than 10 hours at a time (if that) non-stop. About the download, I don't know what went wrong, maybe I needed to download more than four recent headers, perhaps.. Normally it always works. Well, I found several nice small ones, but I have not tried them yet. They are listed he http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filere.../tp/free-file- recovery-programs.htm Of those that look OK, Avira UnErase is no longer available or "supported", but you can get it at: http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_UnErase_d5284.html Majorgeeks is one of the few software DL sites that have not become totally unusable or simply spyware/adware scams. -- There's nothing here to attract existing fans of either bands.
